Great idea. Let's find them all! Maybe you could update the original post with the complete list...

Really? Not that I did not know! Interesting.rhino wrote:Off-center, but the Korg Poly-61 has one analog and one digital (divide down) oscillator thru an analog filter.

Do 80s Akai samplers processed through AX60, AX73 or VX90 count?

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
They use CEM filters, don't they... do you know how the process works? It's not simply an audio input, is it, it's something to do with using the samplers as effectively external oscillators, I think, but correct me if I'm wrong.Z wrote:Do 80s Akai samplers processed through AX60, AX73 or VX90 count?

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
Aren't the Korg Poly 800s oscillators digital? I know they're referred to as digitally controlled oscillators, and are often thought of in the same way as the Juno series, but I keep seeing that they're fully digital. Can anybody confirm or deny that?
MU Modular (Moog, Dotcom, STG, Analog Systems, and Moon modules), MS20 (x2), Microbrute, Electribes (EA-1, EMX), microKorg, AN1x, Nord Lead 2x, Blofeld, Alpha Juno 2, DX7, JX8P, Poly 61 (x2), Split 8, TR-505, Monotron Delay, Ace Tone FR-3, Paia Fatman

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
The Poly 800 generates square waves only, using a MSM5232 IC. I don't know the technical details of how this IC functions, but it has a set of square wave outputs at multiple footings, driven by a programmable timer which is in turn controlled by the CPU. The Poly 800 combines these into "sawtooth" waves by layering 4 octaves of squares at inversely proportional levels. Sonic variation is achieved by switching on or off any of those 4 squares.
I'll not add it to the list, for two reasons: 1) It's more in sympathy with an organ combining footings rather than actual digital waves of any interest, and 2) It's paraphonic filtering leans it more towards stringer territory.
There are other synths that build pseudo-sawtooth waves from clocked logic, such as the Korg Lambda, Elka Synthex, and Crumar Bit series; there are also interesting variations on how to achieve waveshaping using a combination of logic and analogue circuits, such as the Korg PS beasties, Roland Jupiter 4, and EDP Wasp; and they're interesting in their own ways I think, but my intention for this list was synthesizers that utilise fully digitally generated waveforms (ie., memory and binary and all that, rather than an analogue treatment of high/low voltages).
Hope that makes sense.

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
IIRC the Emulator I had no filters, unless the JL Cooper "genmod" was installed. The Emulator II was the first one to come from the factory with VCFs.
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
I haven't tried it yet, but I will be soon. It is my understanding is the each voice from the sampler is run through the 13 pin DIN cable to the synth's pre-VCF mixer section. The sampler's voices can be mixed with the synths VCOs.nathanscribe wrote:They use CEM filters, don't they... do you know how the process works? I want to think I saw on an Akai brochure back in the day a 13 pin DIN cable with 1/4" plugs so you could essentially give the S900 individual outs.
Don't quote me, but I think the Akai synths use SSM filters.
I only suggested this combination since you were also including samplers.

I guessed at CEM because the AX73 uses them... but please report back on your experiences, it'll be interesting.

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
There was a filter (and filter cutoff control) on all of them. The genmod mod just allowed modulation and resonance of the filter that was already there.cornutt wrote:IIRC the Emulator I had no filters, unless the JL Cooper "genmod" was installed. No, they all use the same chip-on-a-synth CEM 3394 chip. But if we're including samplers, I think the akai synths should be included. An akai sampler + akai synth combo is a digital oscillator + analog filter in the truest sense.Z wrote:Don't quote me, but I think the Akai synths use SSM filters
Do you even post on vse bro?
