Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
I guess we can also count the PPG Waveterm (through PPG Wave 2.x) along with samplers or sampler + synth combo, although the WaveTerm makes no sound without a Wave 2.x or EVU.

Lots of options in modular as well. Eurorack, Modcan, MOTM, Frac have all their own spins of analog and digital fun.

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
^ I thought that too first, but since you can combine (digital) oscs with (analog) filters freely anyways, and since there's a metric shitton of each even just in Euro, the list would get rather extensive pretty soon.

What a good idea. So is it the same as a poly 6 with the divide osc added on?rhino wrote:Off-center, but the Korg Poly-61 has one analog and one digital (divide down) oscillator thru an analog filter.

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
No. A quick peek at the service manual reveals a different oscillator structure, using the programmable timers to both generate square waves for osc 2 and reset the ramp capacitor in osc 1, and it uses a single LM13600 per filter voice, which makes it 12dB.
Further perusal shows that osc 2's sawtooth is a stepped wave made from squares summed inversely proportionally, as in some other Korg designs. The fewest number of steps used is 4. Lofi!

Ah, cool. Not a million miles away from the Juno or the Bit One.

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
Hi all, first message on this forum! If you ever need help figuring out how to set them up properly, I'll be glad to help. I spent so much time experimenting before getting it right. There's almost no valuable info on the web/Akai manuals concerning this GREAT duo. Might as well share the knowledge... I use my AX73/S900 combo all the time. Unique results guaranteed!Z wrote:I haven't tried it yet, but I will be soon. It is my understanding is the each voice from the sampler is run through the 13 pin DIN cable to the synth's pre-VCF mixer section. The sampler's voices can be mixed with the synths VCOs.nathanscribe wrote:They use CEM filters, don't they... do you know how the process works? It's not simply an audio input, is it, it's something to do with using the samplers as effectively external oscillators, I think, but correct me if I'm wrong.Z wrote:Do 80s Akai samplers processed through AX60, AX73 or VX90 count?
I want to think I saw on an Akai brochure back in the day a 13 pin DIN cable with 1/4" plugs so you could essentially give the S900 individual outs.
Don't quote me, but I think the Akai synths use SSM filters.
I only suggested this combination since you were also including samplers.

No one's gonna mention this one:
Keytek CTS-2000 and CTS-1000 (preset version)--both have two digital wavetable-based oscillators and analog CEM (3398?) filters. Kind of like a cross between a ESQ-1/SQ-80 and a Waldorf synth--you can move through 3 wavetables over time on each oscillator.

Do you even post on vse bro?

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
Just a correction: CMI series III filters are not CEM/SSM anymore, they're discrete.tim gueguen wrote:Fairlight CMI IIx and III, usable as actual VCFs. Earlier versions had filters, but only to deal with aliasing noise.
Also, Don't remember IIx having filter envelopes, so I'd say it falls in the same category as I/II.

Re: Digital oscs, analogue filters?
It's got lofi oscillators, but you'd honestly never know it! It can sound very smooth. As far as I know, the 12db filter is unique only to this synth, and I really really like it. I may have to jump the filter out to pots just to get the full range.nathanscribe wrote:No. A quick peek at the service manual reveals a different oscillator structure, using the programmable timers to both generate square waves for osc 2 and reset the ramp capacitor in osc 1, and it uses a single LM13600 per filter voice, which makes it 12dB.
