VSE 2014 Song Contest Theme

Post by dustinh » Fri Dec 20, 2013 4:02 am

So the theme I'm proposing for the new song contest is hybrid synths. There was a recent thread listing all of these synths, but most people know what I'm talking about. Digital synths with analog filters.

Notable synths would be:

Mutable Instruments Shruthi, Ambika
Ensoniq ESQ-1, SQ-80
DSI Prophet 12, evolver, poly evolver
Korg DW-6000 or DW-8000

Update 2/2/14: The deadline is now being pushed back to 2/9/14 to allow for additional submissions. Also, the link for the soundcloud page for the contest is here. https://soundcloud.com/vse-winter-2014-contest

Update: 1/2/14
2 Effects are now allowed.

Update 12/21/13

We are officially doing the theme of hybrid synths. The synth must meet two criteria. It must have digital oscillators, not DCOs, but digital, wavetable, or other types of non analog oscillators. It must also have an analog filter or filters. You may not use digital synths run through external analog filters, it must be a self-contained hybrid synthesizer.

-This is a one synth competition once again, so all sounds must come from the same synth including drums.
-No outside sounds or instruments including vocals.
-EQ, compression, plus your choice of one effect only are allowed.
-Submission must be in by the end of the day February 1st. I will be setting up a soundcloud account in the next couple of days for it. PM me for login and password when you are ready to submit.

I'd say stick to doing the drums on the synth itself; it worked just fine with the analog compo, and I don't think there's any hybrids that should have significant trouble doing the same.

I'm inclined to agree on the drum rule. Some hybrids are different though and there's not the same consistency in features with all of them. For example, I don't know if you can assign pitch envelopes to the DW-8000 or not, so getting a good kick sound could be difficult. Maybe not. I cannot speak for every hybrid synth. The SQ-80 has drum samples built in, although they are cheesy 80s sounds, but that might be part of the fun!

what about a digital synth put through a separate analog filter if we don't have one self-contained hybrid synth?

I'd consider that. I'd want the external filter responsible for all the filtering of the synth, so no internal digital filter use.

DW-8000 has a pitch-envelope feature. (Well, a pitch-ramp feature, anyway; certainly enough for drum purposes.)

Running a digital synth through an external filter is very different thing from using a hybrid synth, though. I mean, I could do an entire song on my Proteus MPS and still fit that criteria, and it'd be drastically different than trying to build a piece on the DW-8000.

That's why I said I'd consider it. I want to include as many people as possible, but we do need a rigid set of rules to keep things consistent.

Keep it simple and make it like the last one: 1 hybrid synth + comp, EQ, and one other effect.

I do think the simplicity was a great focal aid with this last one.

+1

Now to decide between the SQ or EX.

Ah, always wanted an excuse to do an all-Prophet VS track ... this might just be the right opportunity.

Very well. I can get behind the same rules as last. We'll keep all the rules the same. The only thing that will change is the type of synth used.

So:

-Use 1 hybrid synth, new or old, and make a song with it
-Drum sounds must also come from the unit
-EQ, compression, plus 1 other effect only

How about having all submissions due February 2nd? That gives people a full month after the holiday madness settles down. Should be plenty of time to make a song.

yeah, i'd have to go the digital through a separate analogue filter route too.
Any kind of digital? I reckon it would be cool to use a cheap Yamaha PSS for this.
