Re: To the person who snapped up the Jupiter 8 for 3500
The Toronto one smells scammy. I hate when they don't give relatively precise addresses. Voltage really doesn't matter, there's convertors or a tech can easily rewire it.
$3500 seems like a decent chunk of change to put into it plus tech but I'm sure RJD2 has someone he trusts and if youre going to use it for a long time then it's worth it.

I don't know... Aside from putting the neighborhood I think it's alright. Dude might not want people to have an idea, esp if it is a known studio. Also, could be worse and just say "Ontario".plikestechno wrote:The Toronto one smells scammy. I hate when they don't give relatively precise addresses. Most glad this one's got a happy and realistic ending after all ...
Speaking of Mr D2, his Crate Digger interview from last year is quite rad. Well worth finding over on the YouTubes.

I've seen the video of rjd2 in his studio, and am guessing he will be fixing it up himself!plikestechno wrote: $3500 seems like a decent chunk of change to put into it plus tech but I'm sure RJD2 has someone he trusts and if youre going to use it for a long time then it's worth it.

Just so you know, the Toronto ad is a scam. I just got a reply today, and it's a textbook scamming answer (the guy isn't in the country, and there is no specification of the object is in the email)...

Re: To the person who snapped up the Jupiter 8 for 3500
he'd have to go some to beat the guy who got one for £375 on ebay uk last year (inc flight case, manuals and midi mod!).
All legit, no scam, seller didn't know what he had and had listed his crappy korg 01W for a higher price. I missed the BUY IT NOW by 5 minutes. The buyer was a bit of a .... considering he knew the worth. I was sick for weeks thinking I could have had it if I'd been quick, I'd have given him twice his asking price too

Re: To the person who snapped up the Jupiter 8 for 3500
I agree. Now...about that JP-6 I sniped for $250 last year...THAT was my CL coup of the decade (actually it was $250 for the Jupiter AND a carload of vintage recording gear). There definitely ARE deals if you're in the right place at the right time and if you're quick on your feet. That Jupe 6 was in museum quality shape, with the exception of a bent VCO 2 knob. I RELUCTANTLY sold it last year to appease someone.philip wrote:Congrats. Although, I think 3500 is a bit expensive, for 12 bit version with problems.rjd2 wrote:some days, the bear gets you. i happened to get the bear that day.
for the record, it needs work. voice #5 is dead. the mod button is either shot, or needs an extremely thorough cleaning. the whole thing is massively out of calibration-autotune doesnt get the remaining 7 voices in tune enough to record with, and the performance section is VERY wonky. cosmetic condition is fair-not terrible, not great. early version, no midi and no DCB or wingding-20 harness or whatever. most of the control pots need cleaning.
it's all doable, just needs some love. and it's going to a user/player/recorder, not a flipper, so yea....theres that. it found a good home.
Lesson learned: never sell a JP-6 (or anything) to salvage a dying relationship. I am still kicking myself for getting rid of it. It was a powerful experience every time I touched it. And now it's in a different country. Such is life.

Re: To the person who snapped up the Jupiter 8 for 3500
Good things can happen occasionally...
I just picked up (in separate ebay sales) a cherry D-50 and a PG-1000 for a total of about $600.
The PG-1000 was listed as "not working/for parts" but the only thing wrong with it was the seller had no idea what it was and no AC adapter to test it with. (they actually had it listed as a synthesizer.) Taking a chance, I put in the relatively low winning bid, got an adapter on ebay for $6.99, and when the PG-1000 showed up it looked great and worked like a charm. Good times!

Not really a bargain in any sense--if the PG-1000 hadn't worked, you'd have been paying the exact same price (or less) for one that did work.24db wrote:Good things can happen occasionally...
Do you even post on vse bro?
Re: To the person who snapped up the Jupiter 8 for 3500
So lessee, adjusted for inflation, the JP8 retailed new for $13,570. A fair used price for something in solid demand that is in good working order would be at least about half that, $6,785. You paid about 25% of the highest one could ever expect to pay for one ever, and got something partially non-functioning. Seems you did alright, I guess. That's about what I paid for a fully functional 12-bit JP8 with DCB off of ebay in late 2007, so there's your yard stick for demand in the past 6-7 years.rjd2 wrote:for the record, it needs work. voice #5 is dead. the mod button is either shot, or needs an extremely thorough cleaning. the whole thing is massively out of calibration-autotune doesnt get the remaining 7 voices in tune enough to record with, and the performance section is VERY wonky.
I can't help but wonder if Roland lost money on every JP8 they sold just to gain a better reputation in the industry, and that's why there's only about 2000 of them. There were no corners cut. The only thing missing is wooden sides. I've only seen one dead one before, and only because it had flood damage. I'd never want to own a JP8 again, as it would give the rest of my gear an inferiority complex and stand out as too much blue blood in a room full of proletariat, but there sure are alot of patches I'd love to sample the f**k out of and use for solid backing tracks.
I didn't spend nearly enough time doing that before it was off to Mexico, now being enjoyed by some guy who has an autistic level of fascination with looking at patterns and later after purchase, told me he "heard a CS-80 would also be nice to have".

I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

really? can you find a working, mint PG-1000 for $220 right now?Sir Ruff wrote:Not really a bargain in any sense--if the PG-1000 hadn't worked, you'd have been paying the exact same price (or less) for one that did work.24db wrote:Good things can happen occasionally...
