Arturia Beat Step---$99 CV step sequencer!

Post by meatballfulton » Fri Jan 24, 2014 3:51 am

Just shown at NAMM, ship in March. $99 pad/knob controller that does MIDI over USB, standalone MIDI, and CV/gate! You can have the sequencer running while still using as a control surface.

They wil sell a crapload of these.

Saw this earlier today, but just watched the Sonic State video. This looks really useful and cool.

Hope it doesn't take long to be released ! Edit: Sweet, March !

Anyone know if it will operate standalone ? I'm assuming it will since the computer isn't in every shot on the video.
bonne chance

I was skeptical when I saw Arturia's video. But after seeing Sonic State's vid from NAMM, I was totally sold. For $99, it's a no-brainer.

It will control any device that uses MIDI or CV/Gate. At least that's what I took from the video. He called a "general-purpose controller" quite a few times.

Ahh okay. I'll need to look up the sonic state video. I only saw the little 21/2 minute demo with the dude sequencing an ARP2600.
bonne chance

I love this… but no real details on the CV output (what's the Gate voltage?) - Triggering an ARP2600 requires a 10v Gate/Trigger, but I presume the Beatstep output is 5v.

My 2600 goes a bit wonky with 5v gates

But considering the price (wow!!!) and the other functions like programmable NRPN control, Arturia can't go wrong with this.

I wan't one now… or two!

@sequentialsoftshock - It has an external power socket, so you're not tethered :)

Specs at Arturia site do not say, the marketing blurb sez:
BeatStep has a standard 1 volt per octave CV output as well as a standard 1 volt per octave GATE output.
Anyone who knows CV knows that gates are not scaled by octaves

I'm curious if this will have more than one CV output, to allow velocity etc. This is basically the mega cheap, small version of the arduino sequencer I'm building right now. Dammit!

I wonder: what can be achieved by chaining two together (after detuning, bien sur)?

Not only that, I'm wondering why anyone would ever buy a Doepfer Dark Time again? You can get six of these Arturias from the price of one DT!

For the price, we will see what corners were cut. There have to be some! The dark time spared no expense in building materials and knobs.
