Re: KAWAI K5000R Cool Blue LCD!

I bought an upgrade "Cool Blue LCD" for my Kawai K5000R. When I first tried to install the display, I was confused because I didn't see a way to access the circuit board so I could attach the ribbon cable from the display by going in through the top of the K5000R. It turns out that the bottom comes off the K5000R and that's how you get to the circuit board.

The second issue was that the new display is thicker than the old one. I replaced the original display with the new one and found out that the front panel buttons no longer worked because the new display lifted the front panel too high so the buttons no longer made contact with the sensors underneath them.

By reading some of the posts on this forum, I found out that you have to mount the display lower than the original display was mounted. I removed all four mounting posts using needlenose pliers (is there a special tool for this? It is a very tedious process using the pliers). There now is nothing behind where the display was - just bare metal so I covered the bare metal with black electrical tape to insulate the display from the metal.

Then you mount the new display flush against the metal using only the two topmost screw holes. Use screws that are a little longer than the original screws which are not long enough.

Don't put the screw in the middle hole when you put the front panel back on, you will mess up the display which is directly below it now that you moved the display lower. I covered the hole with red tape.

I share this post because I want to help someone by sharing my experience like people have already helped me by sharing their experience here about this issue. The photos below show the K5000R installation.

I am about to do this to my K5000W with a Buydisplay.com lcd. I have had good luck with their 16x2 character LCDs. On the K5000W, does it need to be mounted differently than is shown here for the K5000R?

I installed one of the K5000R displays I bought from MusikElektronic on Ebay. The display comes with the ribbon cable correctly configured to plug into the K50000R. I also bought one for my K5000S but I am busy with other projects currently and probably won't get around to installing it until next Winter. I have not seen any close up views of the K5000S display being screwed into place so I don't know if there are any adjustments needed to make it fit.

I installed one of those Naibantov/Gotek floppy disk to USB drives in my Triton rack without too much trouble. I was considering installing one of these in my K5000S but it wasn't obvious how you remove the drive when I had my K5000R rack open so I couldn't remove it from my K5000R. Maybe it will be different when I open the K5000S.

One caution when installing a Naibantov/Gotek USB drive is that it seems that you need to have a PC running XP to use the software to load files to the USB drive. If any one has used a Naibantov or Gotek USB drive with a later version of Windows, I would be happy to hear about it.

I didn't get around to explaining that you can use a mini wrench (one end open and the other end closed) to tighten nuts as small as 2mm like the ones you will need to tighten when you install the K5000R display. So much easier than using needlenose pliers. You can get a whole of set of Craftsman "Midget Wrenches" for about $15 at Ebay. I have found them indispensable for my other projects too.

I believe the EL drive xsistor on the power supply board is Q3.
