sh 101 over juno 60 bass would you.
Hi All....would like to know what you would prefer to do bass with, between these two units.
The juno 60, as i have one running off of a 707. sounds a more natural bass tone to my ears.
i ask because i was wondering if i should get a 101 or 202 for this purpose, or would i be wasting good money.

if youre happy with the juno id go for a synth with a more complex voice architecture to compliment it, rather than the 1 voice vco version
theres a lot of synhs you could get for the price of a 101

If you want a monosynth to do bass with, save yourself the money and nab an MS-20 Mini. It's plenty capable of 101-style bass sounds, and has a whole other oscillator for thicker sounds, plus a whole ton of other features.

MS20 as a 101 replacement? GREAT tip.
If you like the JU, do your bass with it! Careful with the chorus though if you're tracking it in stereo!
Some things that are really handy with the 101: the cool simple but infinitely useful sequencer (compared to a simple arpeggiator on the JU), the clocked s/h, and the fact that it is actually mono.
202 is similar, but has a much more complex sequencer. Also, it's lacking the 101 noise, but has an LFO delay.

The 202's accent affects both filter cutoff and VCA level, which is handy. Happy sounding enough little unit, not much fun to program though. I find the Moog Rogue makes a good foil to the Juno's tone. Or maybe a Yamaha CS, the 5 is cheap still and sounds pretty good although basic.

Nothing that holds its value is ever a waste of money! The sequencer opens up great possibilities with the 707s trigger out, especially since you don't have to use up notes on rests. It's a great way to jam around phrases and come up with new interesting stuff. I usually use the 101 for bass and the juno for arps and trigger them both with either the 808 or 606. Haven't been able to sample the trigger out that successfully yet, but I know some people have good luck with that & rimshots.
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

Well, I didn't mean specifically as a 101 replacement so much as just a general bass monosynth (from the OP's phrasing, it doesn't sound like he's specifically looking for the 101's "That Sound.") But h**l, I'll stick up for the MS-20 here - it can do perfectly fine single-oscillator filter basses, has much more aggressive resonance than any Roland filter I've heard (perfect for your squelchy-rez-bass sounds, if those are your thing,) and has a whole boatload of other options open thanks to its possession of A. a full-fledged second oscillator and B. a resonant highpass filter (set that sucker to just this side of self-oscillation just below your lowest note and shake the whole damn room!) About the only thing it doesn't have is a sequencer, and with the Mini you can get around that with MIDI.pflosi wrote:MS20 as a 101 replacement? GREAT tip.

I don't see the point in buying a sh101 if you have a Juno 60 unless you have a ridiculous amount of money or can find one for an exceptionally low price.

Since he was asking between 101 and JU60, it certainly seemed to me that he wanted "That Sound". Which the MS20, while being a great synth, will not give him.commodorejohn wrote:Well, I didn't mean specifically as a 101 replacement so much as just a general bass monosynth (from the OP's phrasing, it doesn't sound like he's specifically looking for the 101's "That Sound.") Re: sh 101 over juno 60 bass would you.
101 is absolutely killer for tight sequenced bass lines. I pair mine with a TR-707, brings a smile to my face everytime. Juno-60 is definitely more useful, being polyphonic, but IME the SH-101 is the better choice for bass sounds. The prices are getting crazy though. I think I'd rather look at some modern Moogs or maybe a small modular setup for that kind of money. If getting the 101 or 202 means selling your Juno, you'd be losing a fun polysynth.
I have the MS-20 mini at our studio, great fun factor, but the envelope response alone makes it not ideal for bass sounds, IMO.

I actually own both and the LFO on the SH-101 makes it totally different beast. You can get weird FM like sounds out of it, whereas the Juno-60's LFO is rather tame, not to mention only has one shape. Even the envelope on the SH-101 feels like it has more range to it and when it comes to bass, can sound much more rubbery the Juno-60. Portamento also helps with that.moodorf wrote:I don't see the point in buying a sh101 if you have a Juno 60 unless you have a ridiculous amount of money or can find one for an exceptionally low price.

I should add that a great sounding (and cheap!) alternative to the SH-101 is the Novation Bass Station 2. I played on one of these not too long ago and the sound and functionality was very reminiscence of the 101. If I didn't already have the 101, I'd pick one up in a heart beat.

Seriously? On mine, I have to move the attack knob almost up to 1 just to get an audibly non-instant attack at all.Carey M wrote:I have the MS-20 mini at our studio, great fun factor, but the envelope response alone makes it not ideal for bass sounds, IMO.

oh no my friend, i'm not saying the sh101/mc202 aren't different/better than the Juno 60. On the contrary, the sh101 is one of my very very few 'dream synths'.Re-Member wrote:I actually own both and the LFO on the SH-101 makes it totally different beast. Princefan3, what i'm getting at is vintage analogs are insanely expensive right now and even if the 101/202 are great bass machine, at the end of the day they're still just analog synths. I wouldn't pay $1200+ for an aging synth just because it has a better LFO/envelope/filter/arpeggiator/etc. than one I already have.
It's not so much an argument against the sh specifically, but against blowing a huge wad of money on another synthesizer as opposed to just banking it for when you'll actually need it. One day down the road--sooner than you think--your car will break down or you'll have medical bills or some other financial emergency will come along and you'll think to yourself damn, right about now I really wish I hadn't spent so much money on that sh101 when I already have other perfectly good usable synthesizers.

But by then it'll be worth $1600, and you can sell it at a profit.moodorf wrote:I wouldn't pay $1200+ for an aging synth just because it has a better LFO/envelope/filter/arpeggiator/etc. than one I already have.
