Hypothetical

Post by thefonz003 » Sun Aug 17, 2014 5:08 pm

Board admins: if you think this should be in the "Synth Shootout" section, feel free to move it there.

You can get ten synths, and no more. They can he any type---analog, digital, sampler, drum machine, sequencer, vocoder, VA, etc. Money does not matter, but you can't resell any. It's like a fantasy football league where every player is a keeper. Except, as there are multiple Roland D50s as opposed to only one Peyton Manning, it doesn't matter if your roster overlaps with another. ;)

So, have at it! I'm gonna wait awhile to post mine, largely because I'm undecided right now on at least five of the ten.

Do we get a free technician, to fix them when they break down?

Free? No. But money is no object, so you can easily afford to pay the technician. You can factor in reliability, or not---up to you. ;) Let's just assume, for the purposes of this hypothetical, that, even should you choose a rare, old analog, you'll still easily be able to find someone to service it if something goes wrong.

Okay, Pvt. Joker, let's clarify one thing: you can't choose the same 'board twice. Nothing will go wrong with it that you can't repair. (Of course, I'm coming from the perspective of someone who's more into recording than performing, so redundancy doesn't make sense to me.)

haha this is silly but i'll participate - i'm more interested in adding effects processors than hoarding synths so i'll include those too... and... i dont really ever want to own 10 anyway:

-yamaha dx7 or tx802
-sequential prophet 5
-roland jupiter 8

-lexicon 224xl or 480L
-roland dimension D chorus
-yamaha spx90

that'd be plenty to stop there but since i'm supposed to go crazy:

-roland juno 60
-roland d-50 or d-550
-roland vp-330
-korg polysix

Of course it's silly! It's meant to be fun. Plus (and I know this is true for me personally), I think for a lot of people, the composition of the list would vary day by day.

Okay, here's mine (the first three I already have):

Yamaha SY77---maybe the best keybed I've ever played on a synth, and an amazing array of sounds to boot.
Korg DSS-1---Multiple means of sound generation including sampling, and a great analog filter.
Electrix Warp Factory---Incredibly flexible vocoder lets me use anything as the carrier and anything else as the modulator. Can't beat that.
Ensoniq Fizmo (with voltage regulator fix, natch)---I have a thing for unique characters, which this seems to be, from the appearance to the layout of the controls to the sound. Won't be able to afford one for years most likely, but I hope I at least get a chance to play with one at some point.
Roland TB-303---I'm not really even into acid house much, I just love its sound and simplicity.
Moog Source---Analog Moog sounds and filter, plus an arpeggiator. And it looks cool (like a rad cousin of the Speak 'n' Math).
Yamaha CS-80---Such a huge sound. Probably the best true analog poly.
Roland D-50---Iconic.
Roland R8 or R70 drum machine---Not completely sure which of the two.
Percussa Audiocubes---for the light show. Preferably controlling an FM software synth if that's doable.

I'd regret the low number of arpeggiators and might one day wish to have an Ultranova, because those things are sweet, or a Motif, because they can cover so much ground. But, yeah, this setup would work well for any musical genre, and I love to explore and experiment with new influences and such.

FINE

MFB Dominion 1
Eurorack
Moog LP
P600
DSI PolyEvolver
Elektron Analog Rytm
Roland JX-8P
MFB 522
Waldorf Blofeld

Coincidentally that's also my current rig.
OK, I'd trade the P600 for a T8.
