Synthesist Deathmatch Final

Post by Stab Frenzy » Mon Sep 15, 2014 4:11 am

After the elimination of relative new kids on the block Dolby and Clarke, we're left with a cosmic battle of epic proportions:

Vangelis vs Jarre.

Who's gonna be victorious? I have my suspicions, but either way it's gonna be a relaxing battle.

I'm glad my favourite got to the end, now for the final vote ;)

I guess it was inevitable that it would come down to these two. I'm going with the big V. JMJ has probably generated more good music overall, but for me Vangelis' best work is superior to Jarre's best.

Plus I'll take Greece over France any time.

I voted for Jarre because it makes me think of Jar Jar Binks.

While Jarre has some semi-symphonic work that is actually quite good (Etnicolor, Second Rendez-Vous and Chronologie pt.1), Jarre is mostly about synthpop with lots of bleeps. Vangelis is far more symphonic, you could even argue that he simply makes orchestral music using synths and equivalent sounds. A few exceptions of course, but even something like Spiral isn't that far away; you could use six concertharps and the rest would be perfectly possible to recreate with other orchestral instruments.

So the choice is really between bleepy-synthpop and synthetic-symphonic.

A difficult one because both of them were my favourites, but Vangelis has made far fewer cheesy tracks than Jarre. Sure he goes into his romantic trips, but Jarre had such cheesy moments that makes me wonder if he was serious about those melodies or was it just for fun :) I think Vangelis wins as a synthesist, too. Better songwriting and better synth programming.

I'm voting for Jarre, cos he's mah homeboy. Vangelis has alot of great music, but it's too slow and "virtuoso" for my liking much of the time. Jarre is more about catchy pop songs not just neverending new age experiments, even though he's done some of those too.

Plus he's got sunglasses on 24/7 (I assume). To anyone watching this final fight, please wear sunglasses and helmets.
Vangelis is likely to throw his CS-80s around, and Jarre's laserharps COULD go out of control

Sorry, Vangelis, Blade Runner can only carry you so far, and while your other stuff isn't anywhere near as bland and dull as, say, Yanni, it's no Oxygene or Equinoxe or Magnetic Fields or Rendez-Vous.

I'm with the majority on this one. Vangelis is a titan.

What would be cool right now would be to see Hans Zimmer enter the fight and watch the epic soundtrack battle that ensues.

Also, poor Vince.

Great idea. The three of them on a floating stage at sea. It would sink spectacularly under the weight of all that bombast, probably creating a singularity.

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Even post-Aphrodite's Child Vangelis could get straight-up frantic.

Poor JMJ, it seems that he's doomed :-( Laser harp wasn't enough to shoot down all those flying CS80s...
