is there any reason I *shouldn't* do this trade?

Post by Ncapone » Sun Sep 28, 2014 6:06 pm

This is a stupid question, I know. But there's a local guy who wants to trade his Minimoog Model D for my E-MU MP7 command station. Is there any reason I shouldn't go through with it? I just hate to get rid of my gear. But it is a Minimoog, so...

Just make sure you know it's working properly. Not missing things.

seeing comment below--yeah, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

Aesthetically it looks nearly mint, and he says it works fine. Of course I will test it first.

Wow, is that too good to be true? Who knows, but consider first:
1. Why doesn't this person know the value of their minimoog?
2. Why is this person not aware that the trade is such a bad deal for them?
3. What's preventing them from just hopping on ebay and looking up the synth/ selling it on the internet and than buying a few command stations?
4. If they do know, why are they willing to trade such a valuable item for such a comparatively cheap item?
5. If they are aware of the values of the two instruments, what do they know about the minimoog (condition, etc?) that you don't know that might account for why they would be willing to make this trade?

I would also:
1.Make sure to do the trade in person.
2.Test the damn thing
3.Look inside if possible
4. Bring a friend to make sure you don't get mugged.

I would be very cautious if they gave you an address and asked you to ship the synth sight unseen. A typical scenario might be: bait the person with a trade that's too good to be true; you ship your synth them and expect them to ship the synth back to you in good faith; you never hear from them again, and have no way of tracking them down, only to find out later that you shipped your synth to an abandoned building serving as a collection point. With nothing like pay pal to reimburse you, you would be s**t out of luck.
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

ninja, you're absolutely right. I live in Tampa, and the ad said he was in Orlando, which is less than an hour drive away. But after the deal was agreed upon, he's all of a sudden in Atlanta, and wants me to ship him my synth first. NOPE! Guess this deal was too good to be true; should've known.

Yea, that definitely sounds like a red flag! I think most people would at least investigate a trade like that... It's hard to say you should have known, because you never really know, you know? :) As long as you have your wits about you1 and ask the right questions, I think you can successfully sniff out scammers. Outside of friendly (or snarky)faces on VSE, I'm personally extremely skeptical, if not cynical about gear trades. There's so much risk, and potential for bad blood if someone decides that they got the short end of the stick!

He's pond scum, sorry to hear. The fact that he suddenly relocated after hearing you were an hour's drive away

Might want to check Tampa and Atlanta areas for anyone reporting a stolen Minimoog. That's if he ever had it in the first place.

Good call, avoid avoid avoid ....

Similarly, someone with an ATL area code posted a $1300 mini on Chitown's CL last week, so there you have it.

I remember reading a year or two back about this guy who was screwing over a ton of a people doing the same thing. He'd go on forums asking to trade stuff, but then would never ship anything. Weeks later, you'd see the items being hocked on eBay. He even had the nerve to post online laughing about all the gear he got and sounded like a total sociopath. Someone over at the Muff Wiggler forums actually figured out who it was, got his personal address and opened a police case against him, but I don't know if anything was ever resolved.
