What Synth has the most Mojo?

Post by Walter Ego » Wed Oct 15, 2014 7:12 pm

So...what synth that you have played have you just sort of "melded" with very quickly? What's been the most intuitive instrument that has given you a more-than-aesthetic experience, where you feel that the instrument is just an extension of yourself?

For me, it's the Jupiter 6, though to be fair, I haven't played an 8. And in the last few days, I have to say I've been having a wonderful time with a Korg SB-100 Synthe-Bass (probably because it's so simple and so full of character). But it's a very different and more limited experience.

Part of the mojo with the JP-6 is jamming with a drum machine triggering the arpeggiator. It's similar with a Juno-60, but not the same kind of commanding feeling as being at the helm of a Jupiter. I would lose hours jamming with that thing...

So...what has the most mojo for you?

(Hope no one has done this kind of thread for some time...)

For me it's the sh-101. The whole thing is a giant sweet spot for the type of music that I like. Almost any part that I'm looking for will sound exactly as I imagined the part should sound if I use the 101. It just sounds right, every time. For me: 101 = Instant mojo! 8-)
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

Why, the Mojo of course!

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Back when I had it, the Moog Rogue used to be pure mojo. Now I can do more with an MG-1, but I just don't get the same sense of instant inspiration from it.

DSI evo desktop for sonic weirdness.
Nord Micromodular for basic subtractive poly, 2op fm patches, and analog drum kits.
Doepfer Dark Energy for instant analog bass and leads.
We'll always be remembered, we'll always be dismembered.

Well, I haven't owned enough synths to give an informed answer, but the jx-8p is my swiss army knife for the time being. It's a tad polite, but I'm getting a good range of sounds from it.

It's blasphemy I know, but I'm not sure if I even really want anything else right now. Pretty satisfied.

Minimoog, Jupiter 8 the usual suspects I know but they do make you want to make 80's music even if you don't like it haha

Waldorf Blofeld - I used this extensively, however digital sounding it might be. Matrix menu worked for me.

MiniMoog.
I vote the Minimoog in terms of some intrinsic thing that happens in it's sound - it just sounds so alive, i can put headphones on and let it drone with a slow LFO and just listen to the circuits massaging my brain for hours. It has Mojo in spades

When I picture my favourite synth sounds in my head though, the Micromoog is the synth that gets closest to that, followed closely by the SH-101. Though they have quite different filters they both have very (subjective term alert) watery and bubbly sounds. So I think the Minimoog has the most Mojo, but the Micro and SH-101 best connect with my Mojo.

Yes I'm aware of how silly this all sounds
