I just gave a -12st CR-78 clave sample with a 27ms delay.. Sounds nice, but not quite it. I think the example in "Listen" sound far better than in Mad World. Specifically that sound is what I'm trying to learn about and recreate.

Well I literally spent no more than a minute setting that up so do your own experiment! But yeah i'm not convinced either. If it is the drum machine there's obviously some further processing, reverb at least.

I wonder if they didn't sample it and reuse it in "Listen" and elsewhere. Still could be a stock sample as well - they worked early on with someone who had a Synclavier I think, and Emulators were around. Surprised no-one has identified it yet actually.

sure that Chris already had one by the time of that recording (the single was released in sep 1982).
I've always assumed Chris Hughes had played the percussion, or at least sampled himself into the Fairlight.

Chris, who used the pseudonym "Merrick", was a drummer for Adam Ant. He and the rest of the Ants were immortalized in the lyrics for "Ant Rap" when Adam Ant rapped, "Marco, Merrick, Terry Lee, Gary Tibbs and yours truly."

Didn't they work with Naked Eyes as NEON? They had a Fairlight from the start.

This is good, albeit not especially helpful for our purposes. They talk about recording 'Pale Shelter' and 'Suffer The Children' with David Lord before 'Mad World' and the rest of the album was done with Chris Hughes.

I got very close to the 'Mad World' sound by layering the K2 sample from the CMI Percussion disc with the Gamelan sample (Gam2) from the second Mallets disc. I tuned the latter down by 7 semitones and played a Gsus4 chord.

Here's a dry demo...

...and a wet sample:

So basically we're now talking any kind of vaguely metallic sound? Mmmkay...
