New hybrid digital/analogue Roland JD/Xi

Post by Infrasound » Fri Jan 02, 2015 1:06 am

Seems to be a bit of discussion at gearslutz, and here;

It looks to me like a hybrid instrument with 'digital' in an orange font, and 'analog' in turquoise.

A new JD huh? Interesting, but why should it be any more than the Juno and Jupiter debacle of late? :|

I'd be willing to bet any amount of money that it's not hybrid or analogue. Looks like a Microkorg competitor using the Aira code to me.

Really interesting ... doesn't seem to be an AIRA product either. I wonder if it will adopt the ACB and plug-out technologies they used for AIRA gear?

I'm very skeptical of Roland ever doing an analogue synth ever again, but curious as to why they'd write 'analog synth', with 'digital synth' above, as well as 'analog lpf'?

Because it's analog modelled? :geek:

The V-Synth had a waveform called analog, doesn't make it actually analog... just saying.

Yeah my thoughts exactly. Especially with the JD name.

Those look like minikeys...ugh :---)
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

WTF is up with all the synths with minikeys these days. Some of us actually PLAY our synths.

However, I am intrigued by the x0x programming grid.

Mini keys are cheaper to produce and sell better, and synth manufacturers are more interested in making money than in making you or anyone else happy. Don't blame the manufacturers, blame the people who made the microkorg the best selling synth of the last ten years.

This is exactly why I don't play anything after the year 2003 or 04. I can't stand mini keys.
Waveforms, and filters, and knobs. Oh my!

Marketing. "Analog" is a hipster buzzword

I wonder if it will be a another three octave keyboard? With minikeys will another octave be too much to ask.. IMO three is useless for a poly...

EDIT/second thoughts: Though come to think of it I reckon the whole Digital Oscillators, analog filters could be a possibility. I think that perhaps the success of the "new analogs" has taken them by surprise and they've perhaps just started to take a re-look at the technology... A year behind their competitors...

I'd buy it if that was the case and it was the right price. It would be like my esq but minus the lo-fi

One of the admins at Gearslutz uploaded more pictures and some specs:

- analog synthesis with TRI, SQUARE & SAW waveforms + SUBoscillator PULSE/SQUARE
- digital analog modeling synthesis from Roland SYSTEM-1
- analog LPF
- digital filters from SYSTEM-1
- vocoder with MIC input
- TB-303 style sequencer
- LFO with TRI, SQUARE, SAW & SH waveforms
- 37 Keys keyboard (mini-keys, keyboard has Velocity)
- 2-part digital synthesis, 1-part analog synthesis, 1-part Vocoder

So to everyone saying it won't be analog...

That sounds pretty awesome to me. However, I'm a bit concerned about the lack of controls, so I'd like to know if it's fully programmable through menus or an included editor.

They lost me at "mini-keys". If my child is in the market for a keyboard, I'll let them know (oh yeah, I don't have kids...).
