The long awaited Sonic State review video is here

Drum edit flexibility is ridiculous.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

I watched that vid earlier today. Whilst the digital & analogue synth parts are a bit meh, the drum parts have made me develop a small amount of GAS for this.

They are seriously addressing the importance of the drums in music production, although a lot of it is the menus. I'd guess filter and effects tweakage will satisfy most people and you can get at all of that from the panel.

Where was this thing when I started out? This is the same price as a CZ-101 was back in the 1980s but with 32x the polyphony, effects and sequencing thrown in. A perfect example of why I prefer gear made today over vintage stuff.

Korg is going to have to hustle to protect their minikeys empire.

Indeed, clever implementation of the drum stuff, and each key being completely independent is pretty powerful. If this was 2004, before I'd owned a real synth, I'd buy this.

Definitely cool, but not all that different in concept from the Roland JX-305, right? Sound of the thing aside aside, the drum edit capabilities seem on par.

At which point? He seems to think it's not a bad piece of gear.

I remember reading on another forum that he was sick while filming this video, so that's a big part of why he seems a bit less enthusiastic than usual. But yeah, not a bad piece of gear. I agree that this synth would benefit a lot from an editor, but it appears that everything can at least be accessed in the menus. The Roland Aira lineup is currently lacking a compact, high voice polysynth/rompler type synth and this will fill that gap pretty well for a lot of people. Certainly puts the Korg micro-X to shame.

Another video, from Japan where the synth is already in stores. This goes through all the factory presets, which as usual tries to cover all the bases so everyone is sure to find something they don't like. It does however show off what the machine can do with clever programming. I can imagine recording some of the patterns into Live as the basis for a track.

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Not at all. He called it a "cracking little synth" at least twice, I think. I'm not British, so I can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure that's high praise!

I do like it but I'm not going to buy one because I don't need it. It's a very clever design and coming from Roland it's quite a surprise.

At that price, NEED doesn't matter.
But I applaud your self control.

I am interested to hear how the big brother JD-XA sounds as well.

Yeah, the XA looks interesting with the implementation of a poly analogsynth. Good to see that Roland cracked under the immense analog pressure and starts waking up.
I'm looking forward to test the XA when it comes out.
