Re: New hybrid digital/analogue Roland Synth?

Hmm, first possible gotchas...notice the single "Envelope" knob? Where's the EG depth for the filter??

How come there's no PWM depth on the LFO??

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

They've basically sticky taped a monotron to an mc505 and put a keyboard on it, I think it's a bit much to be expecting actual synth type performance from this.

I suppose it's a better EG than a TB303 had, but if the EG can't mod the filter, what good is it?

Could Roland really be that stupid? :help:

Here's a pic of the larger version showing the Amp Envelope Attack settings on the display screen:

The smaller version has a display screen along with a set of cursor and value buttons as well, so it's possible that there's some extra parameter settings buried in the menus.

Wait, did I understand that demo correctly? Can you not layer the digital and analog sounds?

Maybe their cunning plan is to get everybody to stop nagging them for an analog poly by giving them a stupid, irritating analog poly.

Only using the sequencer (having it play the same notes on two tracks) and perhaps over MIDI, but definitely not from the keys.

Right. In one of the demos, the guy said that you can sequence both the analog and digital parts to play at the same time. But you can't create a patch that contains, for example, one sound created with the digital oscillator and one sound created with the analog oscillator. That's how I define "layering," anyway.

The good news is, you can layer digital and analog sounds with another hybrid, though: the DSI Mono Evolver/MEK.

I was feeling quite well disposed to this as a budget just-have-fun-with-it synth, but no envelope control for the filter? Come on.

How come there's no PWM depth on the LFO??

Image
You press the destination button, that's connected to the Envelope depth knob with a little red line, to toggle between using the depth knob to for pitch, filter and amp, like on a Fizmo. :read:
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

Isn't that the LFO depth knob? Amp is one of the selectable destinations and it would be very weird to me if there was an amp env depth knob as well as an env depth knob that you could select amp as a destination of.

Yep.

And it's certainly super useful that you can only route the LFO to one thing at a time, to boot.
