FM Synthesis as a Metaphor

Post by KBD_TRACKER » Sat Jul 18, 2015 2:24 pm

Starting with the use of DX100s in some techno music, this is a discussion on the complexity of FM programming ("an inexhaustible generator of odd shapes"), the fathomless (and almost always un-repeatable) complexity of interactions between parameters, and a parallel with "fretless" string instruments ....

I think I know what you might be getting at.
But this guy does have some notoriety .... so his point of view might be worth some thought.

Meh... The idea began OK but then leapt all over the place waxing peotic about what exactly ? That Techno is the next big step in the evolution of music ? The disjointed and sloppy metaphor about FM never really went anywhere to begin with, was dropped near the end of the article and was never brought to conclusion. I, and probably most everyone else, would agree that the technology helps shape the art and it would have been cool to hear more about that in detail.

I agree the article is more than a little disjointed.

I think he is trying to discuss nuance in electronic music performances.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.
