I do believe the Casiotone 201 predated the VL-1 by a year or so. Afaik it was the first Casio keyboard to hit the market back in 1980.

Speaking of the 201, it was also used by Landscape on their album From the Tea-rooms of Mars ....(released in early '81 but recorded in mid '80).

The Casio MT-40 (also 1981) was apparently the basis for the reggae tune “Sleng Teng Riddim”:

You're very likely correct. I was second guessing myself, and went back and add "after the VL-1" a few minutes later. I think I saw someone say that the VL-1 came out in 1979. Not the way I remember it, but it just goes to show that you can't trust everything you read on the internet.

Oh, I almost forgot...Charles Bernstein used a small Casio keyboard for the electric violin sound featured in the ominous opening music
to "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984). He couldn't recall the name of the keyboard though.

(the casio appears at @2:03)

This is one of the best synth scores from the '80s I think. Charles recorded the entire score at his home studio using a TEAC 1/2” 8-Track

Tokyo Police Club's "Citizens of Tomorrow" contains some classic Casio-chord action on the verses. The "Lesson in Crime" album in particular sounded like it had quite a bit of Casio on it - their keyboard player uses a Casiotone 405 pretty regularly, if I remember correctly.

Used to have a CT610. In simulated woodgrain  It was a great instrument, I miss it.
