TR-8 sequencer synced with Arturia Microbrute sequencer

Post by habibardi » Tue Mar 08, 2016 9:06 pm

Hello!

I've been making music for a few months but can't seem to find a solution to my problem.
I own a Roland TR-8 drum machine and an Arturia Microbrute syntheziser.
The Microbrute is also a sequencer, and I would like to play its sequences in sync with the drums of my TR-8.
I connected the synth to the "external instrument" input of the TR-8, and linked the machines via MIDI.
However, the melody coming from the microbrute always seems to be off!

I know I'm doing something wrong, so I'm asking for your help! I may be needing an audio interface, or some kind of gear that would make this possible.

Thank you for your time!

(I'm new on this forum, and english isn't my first language, so I'm sorry if anything is problematic)

You might well be doing everything correctly: the micro brute sequencer has crazy issues synching to external midi clock. Check the arturia microbrute forums. Someone actually started a change.org petition to get them to fix it!

Technically, you could connect the MicroBrute's audio out into the TR-8's external audio in, but I recommend running them into separate channels on your mixer.

In the video below, I'm running the TR-8's MIDI OUT into the MicroBrute's MIDI IN, but I've actually got the MicroBrute triggering the Roland System 1M via CV/Gate (but same idea as you're wanting to do).

I've never had any sync issues with my MicroBrute.

I see! So what would be the easiest way to use CV/Gate in order to solve my sync problem?

Thank you for your time and your answer, keep up the great music! :D

No! My use of CV/Gate in that video was to simply transmit the sequence programmed on the MicroBrute to the System 1M.

You would hear the same sequence of notes if we were listening to the audio of the MicroBrute instead of the System 1M.

Here's one of the first videos I made when I got my MicroBrute which is pretty much what you're trying to do except I'm using a TR-909 instead of a TR-8.

Same cable flow: TR-909's MIDI OUT to MicroBrute's MIDI IN.

Z, can I ask what firmware you are running on your microbrute?

I never updated the firmware on my MicroBrute. So it's whatever was in November of 2013. That's why I'm using a Leatherman multi-tool to hold keys down to keep the sequencer playing.

@habibardi, did you make any headway with this? I wonder if the firmware has anything to do with it.

@groy Actually I'm still stuck... However I found a use to the microbrute by connecting it via MIDI and EXTERNAL IN (without sidechaining) to the TR8 so it uses the TR8's sequencer. Being a techno producer I think it's a nice and original way to create a nice continuous bassline!
But it stays reaaaaly reductive...
