Midi Loop Recorder

Post by madmarkmagee » Tue May 03, 2016 8:32 pm

Hey, I was wondering if anybody knew of any really cheap simple hardware midi recorders. Preferably something like a guitar loop recorder pedal, but records midi instead? So I can play a loop into it using a synth and than instantly play it back and edit the sound?

Nothing like that exists today. Some 80s-90s era standalone sequencers could probably do the job.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

I was looking into these for a while, and don't know why there isn't one. I looked into building one, but ultimately went with an audio looper with midi sync.

You guys aren't Googling hard enough.

I have a Midisizer Midirex which is pretty good. It's a self build but I bought mine ready built s/h.

Has four channels with an OK interface (Too much clicking of the main encoder for my liking), it does the job you want with some useful extra features. One thing that I would say is that it would be nice to hang a midi powered drum module (they do/have existed) off it in order to get metronome functions although I do get by with just a count in of triggered notes on my synth.

Anndd,

The Future Artist MIDI Looper

I really like the simplicity of this one and since it shouldn't be too expensive I think I'm gonna take a punt when I get the time & sell a piece or two of gear.

So nothing perhaps as fancily designed as an RC-505 but then again neither of these companies have Roland's money, experience, resources or customer base. PLus you can already see how niche a MIDI looper is right? ;)

Happy Vintage Synth Looping!

Just download a free copy of Ableton Live Intro.

The MIDI Looper serves as the automated helping hand for the electric piano, synthesizer oraccordion player.
Well, this is definitely a must-have! ;)

Also:
Link for Midirex

Thx for the headsup kayvon, first I've heard of both of these.

Haha, well any business should examine their potential market so I give them credit for that.

The other completely over the top option (both $-wise and complexity wise) would be an Elektron Octatrack which apparently has MIDI looper modules (in Elektron-speak 'machines'). I'm not sure they record all CC/pitchbend data and suchlike but it certainly added to my interest in an Octatrack.
