Crumar DS-2 VCO vs DCO

Postby Daniel Byrne » Wed May 11, 2016 5:05 pm

Hi there. I was wondering if someone could solve this dispute once and for all. Preferably this would be from someone who understands electronics.

The Crumar DS-2 oscillators: are they purely analogue VCOs with just the keyboard's frequency signal being digital, or are they analogue oscillators under control of a digital clock (classic DCOs)?

Also, does anyone know what type of filter it has? I.e. transistor ladder, OTA etc.

Thanks in advance. :)

Dan.

DCO v VCO is a false dichotomy. There are a lot of ways to make an oscillator. Sounds like the Crumar generates the waveform "analogue" but the pitch is digitally controlled.

The waveforms on the DS2 actually look very digital. Check out the sound doctorin youtube videos, he talks about about the stepping shaped waves

The filters are 3080 OTA's

Either way, I picked one of these up about a month ago and whatever the h**l the oscillators are it doesn't really matter because the thing sounds beefy as h**l. Punchiest envelopes too.

There are a few other synths that use stepped waveforms, like the SH-1000 (which uses a VCO) and the Poly-800 to name a few.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Seems like there's just so many ways to make an oscillator. And yes indeed, the DS-2 is one of the fattest monosynths that I've heard demos of, which is why I thought to ask on here to ask about its design. :)

My Andromeda A6 has 32 VCOs stroking me, so I don't need a real womans

Operators are digital so I guess they're like watching p0rn on your pc

Here's a good explanation of why a famous DCO synth is not "as digital" as one might assume:

....something something.... "you're one smooth operator"

Sorry, I don't know why, but this tread made me think of playing the first gen PlayStation game "rage racer," and all of its techno-sound-design glory.

Uhhh don't you have a JX-8P which uses DCOs?

Sex with real womans is good, but he still like to play with his JX-PP :)
