Favourites that spring to mind:-

Go West early production (eg, We Close Our Eyes, synth sounds and arrangements are great)
Scritti Politti (Dave Gamson's synths and arrangements are superb. He even makes DX7's sound good!)
Propaganda, particularly "A Secret Wish" (Steve Lipson, Andy Richards synths and arrangements)

1. That chilly and noisy vox from the Fairlight, it's also in the Roland U, JD, JV, XV and whatnot. You'll know it when you'll hear it.
2. VP330, one of the few vintage sounds that - to my taste - still kind of holds up today.
3. DX7 EPiano (the 1:1 + 14:1 ratio thing). There's no escape, it works because it's still great.
4. the Linndrum "snare", because it's overwhelming in filling up the audio space.
5. Submarine ping, so, basically any synth that has white noise and a resonant filter. Never fails to make a dramatic impression.
6. CP80 piano, it's clunky, but boy does it have style.
7. Rhodes. With a huge reverb, and when playing soft, this is about the most intimate sound I know.
8. 909 kick. Simple, yet super effective.
9. see #10
10. see #9
"You know I love you, CS, but this is bullshit." (Automatic Gainsay)

In no preferential order (I love those 80s cliché sounds):

Fairlight Arr1
E-mu E2 Shakuhachi, Choir, Orch hit, Marcato strings
Yamaha CP70/80 piano
Mellotron Choirs (not too keen on the strings)
VP330 Choir
JP8 synth strings and brass (almost anything JP8)
Prophet 5 sync
Minimoog basses
Almost anything DX7
Wurlitzer EP200 piano
PPG metallic sounds (not wavetable sweeps)
D50 Soundtrack and a soft pad I created on my long gone D50
Solina strings with FX
LinnDrum /LM-1 drums
GC

1. The thunder that issued forth from the Jupiter 6 the first time I pressed a key.
2. Main riff on Covenant: Speed (Club Version). Guessing it's the MS-20 in action.
3. Wailing SH-09 (I believe) lead lines all over Xeno & Oaklander: Vigils.
4. Beautiful detuned saws on Solvent: Built in Microphone.
5. Sampled and layered Mini and Pro-One basslines on Front Line Assembly: Tactical Neural Implant.
6. Bass and Snare on almost any Travelogue song. I don't know how such meaty bass is possible.
7. Clinical and metallic PWM bass available on the MS-2000 and MicroKorg.
8. Rounded midrange saw patch (filter only about 30% open) from Oppenheimer Analysis: Devil's Dancers. One of my go-to patches.
9. Short envelope (but attack not at zero) saw patch on Volca Keys. It sounds like feathers. If feathers were knife blades.
10. Duckfarts.

In no particular order:

1. Basic square wave sound (think "Swingtown" by Steve Miller Band)
2. D-50 breathy/"chiff" sounds
3. Moog bass (think "Kelly Watch the Stars" by Air)
4. TB-303 with lots of portamento
5. Yamaha SY77 "LEXUS" (never heard it in a track but it's on one of the Voice Crystal SY77 collections I have. Synth strings in the left hand. Trombone solo in right, with strings fading in a fifth above the note being played if it is held out)
6. Almost any wah-wah/phased electric piano sound
7. Big arpeggiated chords
8. Pizzagogo (thanks again, D-50)
9. Pizzagogo or other pizzacato strings played with an arpeggiator
10. ARP Solina strings
11. LinnDrum snare and others like it (love the huge, overemphatic snare sound)
12. Resonant synth brass that sounds like it's saying "wow" (Mannheim Steamroller is good with these)
13. Generally any pad being swept through a resonant filter

While the hardware certainly sounds better, but meanwhile my favorite synth sounds came from these emulations:
1. Moog Modular V - Anything from Bass, Lead, Fx

3. Softube Modular - The Doepfer and Intellijel modules are my dream come true, including HeartBeat
4. Synclavier V - for anything FM
5. CS80 V - Lead and Pad
Hardware:

7. uWaveXT - Pad, FX (along with uQ)
8. Ultranova - Digital Stuffs
9. Microcon 2 - Pure Bass & Lead
10. JD-990/JV1080 - All time favorite rompler
