Re: Synths and You (the collection of opinions)

First post in a long long time.....

I have had many many synths come and go through my studio over the years. Andromeda, Voyagers, Studio Electronics stuff, XTK, Pulse+, Nords, 106, 303, evolver, ion, Jomox stuff, FR Revolution, FR-XS, 909, and i'm sure there were others that I can't think of at the moment.

What I have left is a Largish 5U modular, Pro One, PEK, Juno 60, 777, 606, ER2, RS-09.

Questions:
1) The synth that made you want to play music: Jupiter 8, Can't recall any specific song; however, a friend had one back in high school (early 90's) and it was just sooooooo baadd @$$!

2) Your first synth: Alesis Ion. What a great first synth! Seriously! It's crazy, they sell for the same price today that they did when they were new..

3) The synth that has surprised you most: Juno 60; lots of happy surprises with that simple interface... If you by chance happened to make a bad sounding patch, yea right - just turn the chorus on and it will sound amazing!

4) The synth that has disappointed you most: Alesis Andromeda, the thing sounded friggin awesome; I loved the ribbon controller; however, the firmware just seemed so glitchy AND even though it had an enormous amount of knobs and buttons there was still a tremendous amount of menu diving involved in creating patches. I wanted to love it but in the end I couldn't :|

5) The synth you love most: Pro One, I am on the fence about selling it to fund something new.... however I just love that thing. The filter is ground shaking, it plays wonderfully, with its basic mod routing it can sound bizarre, it can control my modular AND my modular can control it... I simply love that thing. What to do? What to do?

6) The synth you've gigged with the most: Never played live

7) THE synth you really would like to own: DSI Prophet X It will most likely never happen. But, yep, I want it.

8) Your newest synth: Future Retro 777 (purchased in 2007, I haven't bought anything in a really long time)

9) The next synth you are going to buy: DSI Rev2 16 Voice. I love my PEK but I want more voices and I am not going to shell out $2k for a PER (I should have bought one when they were selling for less than $1k)

10) The synth with the best filter: Future Retro 777

11) Favorite synth manufacturer: Probably DSI
Don't feed me Indian, you WILL regret it!

1) The synth that made you want to play music:
Sequential Prophet 5 (as played by John Carpenter)

2) Your first synth:
Sequential Multi-Trak

3) The synth that has surprised you most:
Multi-Trak.. It actually sounds decent, and has a nice built in sequencer. Key bed works better than expected. I only paid $470 for it, so wasn't expecting much when I got it 4 years ago. A 1-voice, 1-VCO bass line from it really shook the car, when I recently played a track made from it in a new Dodge Challenger. I thought, my Multi-Trak did this?!?! I was impressed..

4) The synth that has disappointed you most:
None so far..

5) The synth you love most:
Haven't totally fallen in love with one yet.

6) The synth you've gigged with the most:
Have never gigged.

7) THE synth you really would like to own:
Prophet 10 or 5

8) Your newest synth:
Prophet 600. The synth I couldn't afford to buy 4 years ago, but finally got last month. Bought it from the original owner, who bought it new in 1984. It has original everything in it and on it, including the 34 year old battery, which amazingly is still retaining the program memory! If this were a vintage car, it would be classified as an excellent condition "Survivor". It was located in my city, only 20 minutes from my house! I was meant to be its 2nd owner I suppose..

9) The next synth you are going to buy:
A Mono synth, not sure which one yet..

10) The synth with the best filter:
Don't know..

11) Favorite synth manufacturer:
Sequential

I haven't posted in a long while, thought this would be a fun post to get back into it all...

1) The synth that made you want to play music:
I was playing music long before I got into synths (Drums since I was 4 years old, Guitar since I was 8, Bass since I was 13.) The question should be, "What synth made you want to get into synths..." and my answer; the day my Father took me into a music store in 1978 and there was a brand new ARP Odyssey MkIII. It was the first synth I had ever touched, and I fell in love that very moment... went back every week to play it!

2) Your first synth:
The first synth that was bought for my Band at the time that I was designated to play was the then new Yamaha CS-80, a few months after my first touch of the ARP Odyssey. Unfortunately, the band broke up 4 months later and I had to give the synth back. The first synth I bought myself was the Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 the week it came out.

3) The synth that has surprised you most:
Make Noise 0-Coast.

4) The synth that has disappointed you most:
Stylophone 2.

5) The synth you love most:
Ooh, that's a hard one... either my Waldorf Microwave XTk or my Buchla Music Easel.

6) The synth you've gigged with the most:
My Eurorack setup. A close second is my Korg ARP Odyssey and my Korg MS-20.

7) THE synth you really would like to own:
EMS Synthi AKS or VCS3. They're number one on my wishlist, number two being the ARP 2600.

8) Your newest synth:
Buchla Music Easel.

9) The next synth you are going to buy:
Waldorf Quantum. I'm first in line for the U.S. (not counting the sound designers who got their's first.)

10) The synth with the best filter:
Too subjective, but I love the analog grit of the MS-20 filters and the variety of the Waldorf Microwave filters.

11) Favorite synth manufacturer:
Waldorf!

Now that's a bit of a surprise.
