Whats your Signal Path?

Post by brian.only » Mon May 14, 2007 8:27 am

Just curious what folks are doing out there?

mine is rather simple and modest but its pretty clean.

Instrument> Pedals/ N.Gate> MusicMan hd212 amp w/ spring and phaser> H&K Red Box> Mackie vlz mixer> Motu 828> G4> Ableton Live/Peak/various plugs.

looking to get a decent condenser mic next- Rode NT2A currently in the lead.
Anyone else running through amps in the chain?

At the moment it's very clean;

Instrument -> Yamaha MG12/4 Mixer -> Roland V-Studio.

With effects placed wherever they need be and nowhere else. Any delays or reverbs run off the effects sends to keep noise to a minimum.

Mine is uncluttered:

Instrument -> Alesis Multimix 12 -> Audigy 2

The Multimix has some useable reverbs and a chorus which isn't too bad if used lightly. There are other effects on it, but they cannot be edited and aren't very useful.

For when I do want effects, I generally run the instrument through the input on my Boss DR-880, which is hooked up to the mixer anyway.
I didn't get where I am today by posting on internet forums.

I've been too busy using my machinedrum in the past few days ;)

but my favorite effects are the Alesis Ineko (not really though) and believe it or not, a $25 Johnson's Echo Analog Delay!
it's the most lofi sounding piece ever.

For mono sources I go into my Sebatron Thorax pre/eq/compressor then into a line in on the 002 to Pro Tools or Live. Stereo stuff usually straight into the 002.

Mine is f**k up. :wink: Everything is in its place but typically I don't have enough cables to go round. Spend the first 20 min figuring out what I'm going to use and the next 20 unravelling s**t from pieces and mixer.

Mine is really basic, it's either:

Synth -> Creative E-MU 0404 (soundcard)

Synth -> Novation X-Station with pre-amps and 24-bit audio via USB

Doesn't get much simpler than that. ;)

Sometimes I use Piano -> Ear. :wink:
As always, kindly allow for the possibility I have no idea what I'm talking about.

It's usually
instrument -> interface + midiverbII on insert
or instrument -> keyboard cube (sometimes SM57 mic'd, sometimes REC OUT) -> interface

I really like the EQ and spring reverb on my old cube. I used to use an old bogen tube preamp first in the chain for everything but I left it sitting for a few months and now it's got a loud buzzy noise all the time. I dunno if the filter caps finally gave up the ghost or what.

one of two things...

instrument --> mixer (subgroup) --> tube preamp --> delta1010

instrument --> pedals --> kc150 keyboard amp --> any of a variety of mics (current fav gt57) --> tube preamp --> delta1010

of course theres always aux sends and miscellaneous experiments that usually end up with cables strewn everywhere. :)

Sounds familiar... I really need to make some new cables...

Lots of sound sources, but basically:

Instrument -> Mackie 1604 -> Amp/speakers
\->Presonus Firepod -> Computer via Firewire.

FX connected by audio (patchbayed at leisure) and SPDIF.

I need to buy some proper powered monitors rather than going through the hifi amp, but at least I know what everthing sounds like through it in comparison... space is a real issue though. I'm gradually being hemmed in by synths.

It all depends. For synths, bass, and sometimes guitar it is synth -> Alesis Multimix FX12 -> Echo Layla. There is a Picoverb built-in to this mixer but I also have a Line 6 Echo Park and Alesis Ineko in the effects loop. For vocals it's either Shure SM58 or ElectraVoice PL-10. For guitar it is either guitar -> Pod 1.0 -> Echo Layla or guitar -> Bellari tube pre -> Fender Sidekick 20R amp -> Shure SM57 -> Echo Layla. I can't record drums at home so often times I have to do this at my partner's place. That is usually a combination of mics to Tascam 8-track cassette. Then I take a stereo mix to laptop via an Echo Indigo IO card. Sometimes I do drums with Sound Professionals stereo cardioids into a phantom power box then to my laptop.

EDIT: Monitors. My bad. I run a pair of JBL monitors via an old Technics A/V receiver.
