funny how many people didnt list monitors as part of their chain.

most of my chains are too convoluted to list, but i can say that i have become addicted to pre amping everything, and mic'ing amped synths.

 You topped me there, sir.

All I can say is I wish I could say the same! My grandparents have a piano in their house and whilst I'm hardly a pianist I still LOVE playing that thing when I visit. There's something inspiration and powerful about the tone and musicality of that instrument.

In other words, it doesn't take a good player to appreciate a good piano. ;)

Cool to see the differences in everyones setup.
I used to run my effects from the mixer effects loop but they never seemed as 'hot' (even on 10)as running them direct in the chain, so I added a Noise gate and swap in/out what I want to use w/ each instrument.

yer right tallow,

I cant remember the make of my monitors(got them off a friend) but they are clean and supposedly flat from 32hz to 20,000khz- but I feel they are a bit 'bassy', this could also be that my studio has a pretty low ceiling and is a medium to small room. I usually listen to a few cds I know really well through them to reference when I'm eq fiddling or 'trying' to master something.
Side from that- I use Sony MDR 7506's and some older Sony monitor headphones.

309>KP2+Ploymorph+Pulse=+AN1X+Phase28 main out>Spirit Foliio Lite(Quadraverb2 on FX)>monitor out = Music Fidelity X10D valve preamp>Terratec Phase 28 in - main out=Smartsound amp>HHb Circle5 monitors.

I use the monitor out to record on the Folio as it allows me select only the channels I want to record via the PFL with no processing or the whole stereo mix with eq and FX. Sadly the valves can only be heard on recodings or from the internal monitoring in Sonar.

for the moment : all synths plus output of echo audiofire8 => soundcraft FX16 => mackie HR624 or audiofire8 inputs

what I should get in a few months, is send everything through my two patchbays, use a bigger mixer next to my FX16, and have my fx units connected to my aux outs on the mixer.
in short : I need to recable and buy the bigger mixer.

I would have already done this if the b***h that bought my old mixer would have paid for it.
instead she stole my pics, and relisted my gear on ebay only 2 days later, without even having picked up or paid for it => I found out, complained to ebay, so they cancelled her auction => now she won't pay me any more

Instruments > Boss keyboard mixer > effects(via shitty cables) > Peavey KB300(I don't care what any of you say, the reverb is great) > Ear

Somewhere in the effects chain I have an Akai Headrush that puts 4 outputs to a shitty traynor mixer that also doubles as a distortion pedal (that can't be turned off) for different EQ settings on each delay, fun stuff.

With modern synths, I tend to run them straight into the desk and record the audio on to Pro Tools when I'm happy with the part (it saves me faffing about with the midi later). With the older stuff, I tend to record via some sort of valve gear, such as the Drawmer 1960 or the ViPre.

Interesting mixture of simple or complicated ways available though. It's often down to how much time I have.
