Headphones - what do you use?

Post by premieklovn » Mon Mar 16, 2009 9:01 pm

Just got back from the store with some:

Sennheiser HD25-1 II

Image

...and I love them. They're sitting tight, light weight (140 grams!), produce good and clear sound and all the parts are changeable so if I manage to destroy something I don't need to buy a new set of headphones. I will mainly use them for portable players and DJing. They're a bit expensive but I'm sick of buying mid range headphones that dies after a year.

So, what do you use?

Wouldn't be too optimistic about those replaceable cables. Have replaced mine 2 times after the plug of the original broke. They make bad contact somehow. After some years of the first replacement one side eventually stopped making sound, and my current cable is very sensitive, touch it, and one side may stop working. Touch it again, and it may work again.

Headphones c**p out on me...except for the first pair I bought at Lafayette Radio in 1970 for $8. They sound like sh*t but still work perfectly. Meanwhile I've had a half dozen expensive phones blow out on me over the years. So I don't buy expensive phones any more #-o

My current pair is some Sonys I got at best Buy for $20, I got the cheapest closed-ear set they had. There are much better phones out there, but these work fine for what I need them for...monitoring when miking stuff.

I also have some $15 Koss Sparkplug in-ears that sound surprisingly good:

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Hope I don't have to experience that.

I use circa 1974 vintage Pioneer SE-405 cans like these...

I paid 75¢ for them at GoodWill & they're the best sounding headphones I've ever used...

I love the soft cushions of my Philips SBC HP890.

Never understood why they discontinued these. If I ever have to replace these, the AKG 701/702s look nice and soft.

Before these, I had Sennheiser HD 497s which clamped my head in a vise, hurt my ears (I wear glasses) and gave me headaches.

I have a lower numbered model. Paid 5$ or something at a flea marked. They're a bit too thin-sounding for my taste.

AKG... the model number escapes me, but they were about $200.00 for the set.

Much better than the (admittedly much cheaper) Sonys I used to use.

The lower number, aka SE-205/305's, "are" thin sounding.
The SE-405/505's are the high dollar cans w/better guts ;)

Sennheiser HD 202s here. Definitely not the best, but they do have a decent bass response.

Sony MDR-7506.

I use them every day, and they tend to last ~7 years. I'm on pair #3 since 1987.

cheers,
Ian
