Favorite Effects Plugins

Post by Joey » Mon Sep 14, 2009 12:05 am

So for all the other "favorite X" threads we have, I'm surprised there is none for FX plugins.

So here we are, name a few of your faves and give them a small review so we have some reasons to check them out!

I'll start:

Betabugs Crayon Filter

First off, free, second off, its f**k nasty. It almost reminds me of a digital recreation of the MS20's filter, it has that same grime to it... I use it mostly as a distortion effect, it is really one of the best distortion plugs I've used, goes all the way from sublime to in your face grittiness. Did I mention its free?
No one cares, no one sympathizes,
so you just stay home and play synthesizers.

I only use on actual production:
CamelCrusher
Ferox

CamelCrusher is just too nice and easy to make things sound okay. I do most of my compression and color out of the box, but for the occasional thing I miss, Camel Crusher doesn't disappoint, even if it is more of an effect than a compressor.

Ferox is just fun for here and there stuff, I especially like the Hysteresis control.

I use all sorts of wacky stuff for manipulating samples though.

Yeah I remember when dblue Glitch came out, my first thought was "Guess I can get rid of Supatrigga."

My favorite all-around VST effect plugin is PSP Vintage Warmer. I think I've used Waves L1 more than any other. The Bootsy plugs are getting rather frequent use for me as well.
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

Between Soundtoys and Uhbik, I'm pretty sure I don't have to get an Eventide, at least not for now. Two excellently complimentary flavours of effects.

Plus one for Glitch! I love it on drums and electro percussion madness.
UAD for production - especially Dreamverb, Fairchild compressor, Pultec EQ, 1176, LA2A, etc.
NI Kore 2 FX - deep transformantions/reconstructions soundpacks for WILD effects.

Not big on plugins, but I've got a couple of channels in my DAW that send and return audio through PureData. I've set up a bunch of patches in there as well as some "workbench" templates that let me quickly knock up patches without having to mess around setting up controls and so on (always a bit fiddly in PD). I've also got a spare Wacom tablet set up as a realtime controller for playing the effects.

dfx skidder & dfx transverb
Cakewalk FX2 pack (just been using these since the 90s and would know my way around them even with my eyes closed)
Glaceverb
Kjaerhus Classic Phaser (the rest of the pack is ok)
Prosoniq Pi-Warp
Freeverb
Ohm Force frohmage (when I can't be arsed to use a hardware unit)
E-Phonic Retrodelay (waaaay better than commercial PSP stuff)
