Many of us have a less than ideal space. Read reviews, buy what you can afford. Don't go crazy if you don't have an ideal room or don't want to spend the money to make it ideal. I have older monitors that work fine. They aren't ideal, nothing will be, in my room. I get a mix going, check in in my headphones, & make adjustments till i have it where I want it. I double check in the car. I listen to a lot of music in headphones(ear buds), while at work. I always have those handy, as well. Having familiar sources will get you where you want to be. Even if you are running just one keyboard through your monitors, it will sound different at other reference points. Monitors are built to withstand a little more abuse.
