Roland SH-201 or Alesis Ion?

Post by stropko » Sun Feb 08, 2009 9:21 pm

This would mainly be for classic rock/prog rock covers, writing my own songs, and perhaps a bit of dabbling in electronica. Which do you think is better?

FIGHT!

For your intended uses, the Alesis ION.

Why? So many patches exist already for classic rock and prog. The Roland SH-201 is voiced more for modern club sound. Yea, I generalize - both are capable of what you want to do - I think the ION will do a better job more easily.

cheers,
Ian

I would agree with Ian about the Ion for classic rock covers. I had an Ion and it came with several patches emulating certain sounds from Journey, Styx, Edgar Winter, etc.

Not to mention the amazingly good sound quality and lots of control in the Ion. :thumbleft:

Ion. I've been looking at the 201 myself, but I already have too many VA and not enough real analogue.

I forgot to add that I sold my Ion to a fellow VSE member, EmptySet, who was using it for 80s covers with his band. He was very happy with it when we last spoke.

I have owned both.

201 has a more aggressive sound and can do strings better. The ion is more rounded as well as having better filter options.

The 201 will only take you a few seconds to learn like the back of your hand. The ion is a much more sophisticated instrument and a lot of features are hidden behind menus.

The ion is 4 part multitimbral. The 201 is bitimbral and only capable of splits and layers.

They keyboard of the ion is a world better than the 201. The knobs on the 201 feel cheap, the case is plastic and the sliders pop off easily. The entire construction of the ion feels quality aside from the red plastic sides.
