Hmm... it disturbs me how many on this thread have bashed the Solina and then put ARP Omni on their list - I think some need to read up on their ARP history. The Omni is called "Omni" for a reason - it's several synths in one where it's string section is essentially an Eminent Solina String Ensemble - made under license by ARP.

I have an Omni-2 which in all honesty was fun to restore and looks nice but I'm not really in love with the sound - with the possible exception of the ARP filter on the synth section which is great :)

I've had both, a Solina (first version) and an Omni II. They sound very similar but the Solina was a bit warmer and full.
In the end I sold both because they're not really my think and playing them was frustrating because of their paraphonic nature.

I also had both machines, ARP Omni II and Eminent Solina String Ensemble.

The ARP Omni has a very good sounding synth filter, very musical. But the string section doesn't sound like a Solina.

While the Omni string section is more harsh and fat sounding, the Solina is fine, aerial, atmospheric sounding.

Also the Ensemble effect is not exactly the same. A little bit more pronounced and swirling on the Solina when you are playing close position chords.

In opposition, the ARP Omni is more versatile, with a synth and bass section.
It is much easier to be a good equipment purchaser than to be a great musician.

I wonder if this is down to the chorus section?

When the Modulation button is off on the Solina and the chorus is off on the ARP Omni, the basic sound is also different. More raw on the Omni, more fine and "organic" on the Solina. Notice that you have also a difference between an Eminent 310 U and an Eminent Solina String Ensemble...A Yamaha D-85 sounds more like the Eminent 310 U than the Solina...

A made a little audio clip yesterday with two of my string machines.

Here it is :

Both are lovely stringers...one with a very round and full bass fundament.

Don't forget the grand-daddy: Freeman (Cordovox) String Symphonizer. Three analog voices per key, spring reverb, cabinet the size of a B-3.
