polysix vs prophet 600

Post by vin14 » Tue Dec 08, 2009 8:37 pm

Apologies if this one's already been discussed, I can't find it.

Does anybody own (or played) a polysix and prophet 600?
If so which do you prefer and why?

cheers

Vin

Hello, I actually own both. I don't have much time at the moment so this is certainly not exhaustive. Both have their merits. The P600 has 2 osc, with freq mod and all 3 waveforms can be used at the same time on each osc. It also has nice portamento . The Polysix has 1 osc but has a great effect section (including the ever so lovely ensemble effect) which helps to thicken the sound. It does not have portamento and cannot combine waveforms...however I find it still to be a very organic sounding keyboard. The P600 definitely has more bang for the buck, but I actually have more fum with the Polysix. Jaime

i'd choose P600, wiht all its quirks like limited pot resolution and slow-ish envelopes, i still think its a much more useful synth overall. dual vco, sml polymod section, osc sync. and in a way its a unique colour among analogs as it sports the P5/OBXA vcos , the CEM3340, but uses a later CEM3372 filter , found in likes of Xpander, M12 and Polaris.

its can do pads much better, smoother than a P5 (the CEM-based Rev3 that is)

polysix has nice fx, tho one can always add those after. phaser is rather bland, u pick up a nice old small stone for cheap, and you roll. ensemble is nice tho. overall, even tho its built form SSM chips, i think its the weakest sounding incarnation of SSM polyphonic. there are others that sound much much better, and are more flexible (i.e. Triednt mk1, mk2 and Prophet 5 rev2). i liked it but got bored with it too soon.

ymmv.
