Prophet VS vs. Roland JD-800 / JD-990

Post by solderguy » Sun Dec 12, 2010 12:20 am

There is currently a Prophet VS ( keyboard version ) for sale in a music shop in Ottawa. Went through the presets for half an hour, seemed OK but not remarkable, waveforms in isolation sounded very static and lacking sizzle in the top end ( aside from aliasing ). SSM filters sounded nice though. For a pad machine, capable of epic, atmospheric sounds with great vox, choirs and strings, with good-sounding filters, would a Roland JD-800 ( or JD-990 ) not be a less expensive and better choice ( and more reliable....)? Some of the JD demos on the net are quite impressive.
Cheers.

The Roland JD-990 is a superlative choice, especially with a touch of appropriate post-processing.

That said, your description also brings to mind the Yamaha FS1R, a whole other beast entirely.

cheers,
Ian

Thanks Ian ! Hadn't considered the FS1R, I'll keep my eyes open for either that or the 990. Reading up on it, the JD-990 seems worth holding out for instead of the JD-800.
Cheers, Mike

If you are ever down near To. drop over and demo the JD 990(s) for yourself they are very nice and IMHO better sounding than the JD800. The Fismo is a synth that I have never played but some of the demos posted by various members are fantastic.
Prophet 08, Mini D, Radias, 2 x JD-990, Juno-60, 2 x JP-8080, Fantom X6, Speakeasy Stereo Rackmount Vintage Tube Preamp ...

I would mention Korg Wavestation, it's alot like an improved version of the Prophet VS you tried out, but has no resonant filters (Korg had no resonant filters in their digital synths until the Trinity.) Wavestation is my favorite pad/atmospherics synth next to the Roland JD series.
You can get a JD-990 for almost the price of a JD-800 and it has crossmod, osc sync, true stereo, giant LCD for easy programming etc. LOTS of improvements over the JD-800.

The Wavestation is in no ways an improvement on anything in the Prophet VS.
