Micro Q vs Virus Rack vs Supernova

Post by NovationLover » Sun Oct 30, 2011 8:35 pm

Hi!
What is the best between those 3 synths to make goa/hardcore/psy trance?
Now i have a KS Rack and a Yamaha RM1x(as sequencer)...

Thanks, Giacomo. :D

I'm not a dance or trance guy - so, keep that in mind, but...
I've owned both the microq and a couple of virii (indigo 1 + 2) and the novation nova...
I'd say waldorf and access synths are the closest competitors soundwise - they can both do roughly the same thing (harsh digital analog emulation) and both have about the same amount of programmability (lots!). I've sold them both because I just didn't get along with the sound of either - but, if I were to buy one again I'd go for the waldorf. The virus is an excellently built (nicest build I've ever come across) synth but the raw sound/power is... weak at best - quite dissapointing really.
If you are looking at racks specifically (virus rack not tabletop correct?) I would definitely go with the microq over the virus because it has a better interface/ease of use.

edit: just noticed the supernova was an option!...
ultimately, out of the three, I would go supernova for the sound alone - but, of course, this is subjective. I think it has a much wider range of sounds - harsh/modern to smooth/vintage and everything in between. The interface is great too.

Thank you mate! I think i will go with the supernova... In your opinion, i have a novation synth (ks rack). Do you think the sonud of the supernova is too much similar at the sound of the ks?

Thanks, Giacomo.

I have owned a MicroQ, Virus TI2, Supernova II, and a K-Station. If you asked me my personal favorite of the bunch, it would be the the Supernova. This has been my favorite synth for long long time, and I never grow old of it. Owning a KS, you are familiar with the "sound" of Novation. I think the Supernova is one of the most beautiful sounding VAs I've ever heard. With that being said, I don't know if having a Supernova and a KS is the best choice. I have the K-Station for the simple reason that I can program some basic sounds to use live that I made on my Supernova. Plus I like the compact synth in a live scenario.....also afraid to take the Supernova out giggin'. They may not sound exactly the same, but they are close enough.
I would say to expand your sound pallet a little and go with either the Virus or the MicroQ. Personally, I didn't really mesh well with MicroQ, but that could be because it overlapped some of my other gear. The Virus is a well built synth, and if you take your time to program the sound it can sound great.

Overall, I think the Supernova II and a Virus would be your best choice of the bunch. It pretty much comes down to type of "sound" you are looking for. I think the sound character of the two are vastly different imo, but I would go with a Virus simply because you already have a KS.

Thank you! So, what do you think of the Virus Rack? My budget is pretty limited (300€). I can find it for 300, and the desktop (B) for 400.
Do you think the sound is the same as the B?

Thanks, Giacomo. :)

hi again,
if the difference is only 100 - i'd go for the desktop. The best part of a virus, imo, is the hardware and user interface - it is quite inspiring to fiddle with.
as far as the supernova vs. the KS: I'd say they are quite, similar - but, the supernova is capable of so much more subtelty and range - it just has a lot more character than the later novation synths (I've owned the nova desktop and the x-station myself - both sold now).
My plan of action would be to get the supernova and sell the KS to fund the purchase of one of the other two!
but, then again, as you may have noticed from my earlier posts - I have a habit of constantly buying and selling synths!

Thank you! but i will never sell my KS because i love it's sound. :) So if i find a virus desktop in the 400 range i will buy it, otherwise i will buy the rack ;)

Thanks to all! :)

At the moment, Guitar center used has an original virus(A) desktop for $499 or so.

Thanks, but sadly i'm in italy and the lower price i could find is 450€ ($390) for a A, 480€ ($415) for a B and 300€ ($260) for a rack. At this point i think i will go with the rack. Do you think the sound is the same as the B?

Thanks, Giacomo. :D

Can't help you there because the most experience I've had with the earlier models is seeing one for sale at a flee market. I did however, play a Ti2 recently and loved the sound(although, I would imagine that the Ti2's sound different from the older ones.)

Thanks, Giacomo. :D
The rack has less polyphony (16 voices) and 1 less oscillator. Also there is less hands on control.
If these things aren't that important than by all means go for the rack. Otherwise, and this is what I would do, save up a little longer and get the Virus B desktop.
