SH-201 vs Mopho Keyboard

Post by limitbreak » Wed Sep 05, 2012 3:35 pm

I found an SH-201 and a DSI Mopho KB on craigslist for $200 and $550 respectively. How would they compare? It would be used as a Midi controller as well as a synth, and while the 201 has more keys, the Mopho has dedicated mod and pitch wheels. How pronounced is the difference between analog and VA?

I'm also looking at the Minitaur and the Alpha Juno 1. The Minitaur has hands on control for everything and that classic moog filter, but it seems a bit limited. The Alpha Juno 1 is $250, but I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the sonic palette.

Out of your choices..

SH-201 = polyphonic VA, good interface to learn synthesis, but I'm not a fan of how it sounds

Mopho keys = monophonic analog, sounds quite nice and has a pretty good knobby interface as well, but you're only going to get one note at a time if that's important to you

Alpha Juno = polyphonic DCO synth, will sound way cooler than the SH-201, but iirc doesn't have quite as many features and of course, isn't the greatest to learn synthesis on interface-wise if that's important to you

Minitaur = sounds awesome, I like it way more than the Mopho, but it has less features and no patch storage

It sort of boils down what's important to you: features vs sound and poly vs. mono. Features + poly = SH-201, features + mono = Mopho, sound + poly = Alpha Juno, sound + mono = Minitaur.

Fwiw, my recommendation for a VA poly to learn synthesis on is the MS-2000, and the Minibrute seems awesome for a first mono.

It's an apples to oranges comparison, as noted above. I am not a fan of the SH-201, and I did own one for a while. Also owned a MoPho kb, and only sold it to a bandmate to step up to Mono Evolver kb. The MoPho is a great first synth, and fully featured. It is a mono, but that shouldn't put you off. The Minitaur is also a mono synth, but aside from being a Moog, has next to no features, including a keyboard. I'd set your priorities first, and re-think this.
