Volca Keys vs 80's Korg Polys

Post by national theatre » Mon Jul 07, 2014 11:35 pm

I think a Poly 800 or a Poly 61 isn't much more expensive than a Volca Keys (if I'm not mistaken a Poly 800 might be even slightly cheaper if you look around), so how do these compare? I haven't personally tried any of them - I do have a Volca Bass and I like it, but I've often read online that the Keys is a bit pants, and less often that it's actually better than the Bass (but it doesn't seem to do much more than it besides ring modulation and being able to play paraphonically instead of relying on sequencing all 3 voices separately...)

Both of these cost well over $150. The Poly 800 is $200+ and the Poly 61 is $300+ (assuming you want working ones)

A Volca in Europe is $200 (150€) - the eur/usd thing affects the prices of new hardware but not so much the prices of second hand stuff, so a Poly-800 is roughly the same price as a Volca (125-200€ for sensibly priced ones) around here and even a bit cheaper if you look hard enough (here's a search on ebay.de). The ones that sell for more than that are either heavily modded or include extras such as a flight case, etc. Non-working ones sell for around 50-75€ (I'm just going by the results of that ebay search).
Poly-61 is around 200-300€ (275-400$), but it isn't that big of a difference given the Volca isn't too expensive to begin with.

Oh well, that is Europe for you I guess - a Playstation 4 costs $400 in the US and 380€ around here, which is over $500. Sorry for the confusion.

love my volca keys and it does great things but its limited to a sequencer driven synth for the most part. if your looking for a real time player go for the poly 800 or 61. also its paraphonic like the poly 800 so if you hold a note and hit a new one both will be triggered. poly 61 is independent polyphony
