DX100 vs. CZ101

Post by Swayze » Sun Jul 20, 2014 9:30 pm

Both are cool little synths. 4-op FM vs. Phase Distortion. Same size, same era. So which one's better and why?

They are both very nice. I wouldn't want to decide between them.

The DX100 is a little less heavy, so I prefer it for gigs.

Can't say I've played a DX100, but I have a CZ101 and it's a lot more fun than my old DX7 was. Creating sounds is much easier, plus it has the wonderful Tone Mix feature, which lets you stack two patches per note in mono mode.

If the DX100 were cheaper, I'd just tell you to buy both.

Have both and my vote goes to the CZ-101.

I picked up both recently and I'm liking the DX100 more. While I've been finding it easier to program sounds from scratch on the CZ-101, the CZ just always ends up sounding too "analog" to me. I know it sounds a bit crazy saying that, but I got both of these solely to create sounds which are the polar opposite of analog and the DX100 excels more at this.

On the DX100, you can take any preset, change the algorithm and freq ratios at random and it can become something entirely different very quick and easily. A saxophone can suddenly become some abrasive FM chainsaw lead in a manner of seconds. Maybe in time I'll be able to mangle some more chaotic digital sounds out of the CZ-101, but I've been all over the DX100 like a rainstorm on a motorcycle helmet right now 8-)
