Moog Sub 37 Vs Moog Sub Phatty

Postby ritec » Wed Nov 26, 2014 4:29 pm

I have always wanted to own a Moog and I think this Christmas it is finally going to happen. That said I am really struggling to decide whether to GEt a Moog Sub 37 or the Sub Phatty. They seem to be pretty similar in sound but the Sub 37 has a bigger keyboard, it's Paraphonic, has a sequencer, a screen, an arpeggiator, more knobs on the front panel and other additional bells and whistles. One thing keeping me from the Sub 37 however is the PRICE, the sub phatty is available on ebay for about $720 used while the sub 37 open box is almost 1,300 which is a big difference.

I guess my questions is, which one would you get and why, keeping in mind the price difference.
I could use the money I save to buy other miscellaneous upgrades I need for the studio.

thanks in advanced.

I am extremely happy about my Moog Sub Phatty...great sound, great built quality, fantastic machine.

However, I will sell it for a Sub37...much better interface, Sequencer/Arpeggiator, many many parameters to mod, and a good bank of preset which can be useful at any stage.

Sub37 also has these extra features I think many are well worth the money:
- 1 additional Mod section for a total of two
- More patch storage: 256 whereas Sub Phatty only holds 16
- external/feedback knob
- more panel controls in the Mod sections
- more panel controls in the Envelope sections as well
- Panel controls for the 4 filter slope types.
- The screen allows you to name the patches with 2 rows of characters
- Panel control for Glide osc 1, 2, or both
- The Arp/Seq can serve as Mod sources the Sub Phatty doesn't have.
- Mute button on the output.

Sub Phatty has some of these features under the hood like filter slopes, external audio level, env/mod control.

I watched the Sub 37 Modulation and Sequencing video last night and I hadn't realized how deep that synth was. Holy c**p did they pack a lot into it. I wonder if they will ever offer additional CV IN/OUT mods like they did for the Lil Phatty. Seems like it would be worth the price difference.

No cv out for Sub37. Ever. I've asked the folks at Moog about this several times. they just say it's something with the circuit design that won't allow it. WTF?
My modular so far: Q104, Q106, Q107, Q108, Q109 x2 , Q116, Q118, Q127 w/Q140, Q130, STG Wave Folder, playing with Moog Voyager, VX-351, CP-251, MF-104M (x2 STEREO!)

Sub 37 all the way. What an amazing, fully realised and cohesive wonder synth. I'd also take it over a Pro 2 (or even a Pro 1 for that matter  )

I don't need CV outs personally so to me it's the ideal mono and looks beautiful (and has enough keys to be dangerous) :)
