I picked up Korg's iM1 and am loving it. I'm considering purchasing a Roland JD-800 for the hands on control. How much overlap would there be with the respective PCM sound sets and character of each keyboard?

Thank you!

I find the character of the 90s Korg, Roland, and Yamaha synths quite different.

For Roland, for me I think of the qualities of light, bright, clear, airy, precise - for the Korg stuff I tend to regard it as chunkier, thicker, defocused - in short, the sound characters are quite different and complementary.

So, while they both can do that 90s rompler sound, lot of FX, chiffs, and so on (so there is overlap in that regard) they have a different enough character that the sound ranges are quite different. In short, they are both nice synths for those types of sounds - go for it!

Nicely said, both complementing each other well. Typical Korg + Roland combo of the 90s. I own the JD-990 which is the module version and it sounds different enough compared to the 01R/W or M1 Legacy. Specially with the hands on control of the keyboard version.
