Yamaha DX7ii / Korg Wavestation

Postby A_Paranoid_Android » Sat Oct 08, 2016 10:31 pm

I'm pretty much looking for some mid range 80s-90s synths to d**k around on for a bit. Anyone have a preference on either one? Thanks.

I've heard a lot of love for the Wavestation (and Korg's AI-series synths are just generally great,) but I can say from firsthand experience that the DX7-II is all kinds of terrific (especially if you can dig up one with an E! upgrade.) I prefer the grittier tone of the Mk.1 DX7 myself, but you certainly can't go wrong with it.

I maybe should have mentioned I'm looking for a trippier tone, similar to Mac Demarco's "another one". Would the 2 accomplish this better?

I wouldn't say one is "trippier" than the other. The DX7-II has a cleaner output with a higher-resolution DAC, while the Mk.1 has a little more grit and warmth.

Haha sorry. It's the only word I could think of. I'm relatively new to playing around with synths, so I appreciate the help!

Any time :) If it helps, using the raw sine oscillators the DX7-II can do some lovely pure-tone spacey stuff (my point of comparison would be some of the bits on the FTL soundtrack, but I'm not really into trancey/trippy stuff so someone else would probably be able to communicate it better.)
