my first setup

Post by mdc333 » Mon Apr 03, 2017 7:52 pm

hi! i've pretty much decided novation ultranova is going to be my first synth, with the only real competitor being korg minilogue. i'm working in ableton for now and i've got to know it pretty well so i want to continue using ableton, but i feel a real synth would benefit my workflow. i'm also getting a korg sq-1 sequencer, because it seems like a no-brainer for cca 100 euros. i also have midi i/o soundcard edirol fa-101.
my question is how would i connect ableton, ultranova and sq1 in a way that sq-1 sends midi to ultranova and ableton, ultranova acts as a controller for ableton while at the same time being able to receive midi from ableton and have a channel for synth sound. for the last part i know ultranova has synth/automap switch, so that's probably that. but how am i going to connect all those? how to choose whether the seq. controls synth or ableton plugi? and what if i want to use an effect in the chain, like a compressor? furthermore, im considering teenage eng. tonic drum machine, is there a way to make sq1 or ultranova control the tonic?

Connect the SQ-1 to the pc, and the ultranova. Route the midi through ableton.

The ultranova has a built-in audio interface, and built-in effects. many of its modulation abilities and effects happen in stereo, so i'm not so sure you need the compression pedal as part of a first rig.

Here's how to connect your stuff:

Korg SQ-1 MIDI OUT to Ultranova MIDI IN.

Ultranova USB to computer

SQ-1 is master clock for both Ultranova and Live. You can choose to use the Ultranova as your audio interface or not as you see fit. Read the Ultranova and Live manuals for settting up the MIDI and audio connections.

As far as what the SQ-1 controls, that can be handled by setting MIDI channels. The SQ-1 can only transmit on one channel at a time. Clock messages are not channelized so both the Ultranova and Live will always see the clock.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.
