Should I buy a Synth?
Posted: Tue Jul 16, 2019 11:15 pm
I would really like to make music like: The Midnight, Gunship, Timecop 1983, Pertrubator, Hazer and Dance with the Dead.
Should I get a Synth or am I hearing the wrong instrument?
If yes, Budget <$300.
Was eyeing the Korg Volca FM.

Those do sound like synths in those songs.
I’d rather recommend a DAW and some free VSTs. Timecop1983 also uses a Juno-106.
A lot of the sounds your hearing come from the Roland Juno-series synths and Yamaha FM synths.
If your looking for those sounds on a tight budget, I’d say look into a PC or iPad for synthwave production. There are many free VSTs out there for the computer, and also look at DAWs.
If you’re looking for those sounds on hardware, I’d look at the Volca FM and Volca Keys or Bass as well. If you can spend a little more, DeepMind 6 by Behringer is close to the Juno in terms of sound, but offers a lot more.
So for your budget there’s:
Monologue - monophonic, so cannot play chords or duophonic melodies.
Volca FM - can play chords, learning how to program FM can be hard.
Volca Keys - can play chords, nice analog starter synth.
Or iPad or PC (with FL Studio) with free synths.
