Cant choose....

Post by basssdude34 » Sun Aug 03, 2008 8:51 am

I've done research on alot of production centers and groove boxes and i've narrowed it down to a few....
Roland MC-808 (motorized faders must be a plus for sure) OR MC-909 (dual D-beams are very appealing :D, but I've read it has alot of bug issues )
Yamaha RS7000 (cheapest of them all, but I'm a little unsure...)
Akai MPC-1000 (I've heard these have had some technical difficulties with the pads, is this true?)

I just cant decide between these products...Price range is between $500-$700, and I've seen all these for around that....so if theres a golden bullet in favor of one over the others I'd love to know it....

was also comparing that a lot before getting the RS:
- For sequencing, sampling and the best synth editing without the PC, the MC-909 screen and user interface would be helpful. It also have a flexible 4oscs synth engine, compared to the limited 2oscs of the RS. But I didn't like the pads of it. Also prefer the RS sequencer over it. Some of the best sound for it are in the SRX Supreme dance board.
- I like the MC-808 sounds more than the 909. But I view this as and ideal machine to sit next to a lappy/pc, specially for the synth editing. The included synth and sampler editor would make things easier.
- the MPC-1000 got no synth engine which is not what I currently looking for. But it's the only one with the MPC style pads and sequencing for the other mentioned.
- I choose the RS for the sequencer, pattern interactivity, loop remix, midi play and the sound of it's drum/synth/fx which I like best. It would also do multiple sampling rate. Also, the mini keyboard which is being laid out like a normal keyboard is perfect for me. And luckily, I click with the stubborn drum pad which most people didn't like. I'd rather view this as a gateway from PC and forgetting that it didn't have any USB (it'd be great if it has one though). I simply won't pick this as the only sampling source if bigger sampling size than 64 mb needed. I came with a scsi interface, but meanwhile, things works just by transferring data from and to the pc by a 128 mb smartmedia which cover the max memory size anyway. as for mobility, remember that the RS is big.

I could see myself getting over the issue of the pads for either the roland or the RS, im really not to picky when it comes to that (mostly because this will be my first production/groove center)....also, PC editing wouldnt be a problem for me....but what was it about the RS sounds that you liked so much? what style music would it mostly be geared towards?

it would suit most electronic music, listen to yourself here. Those may not represent the full potential of it (listen to those great and dirty tracks in the RS7000.org), but should show how wide it could be. as for the sound, there's something to it that always impress me. It got a high quality audio and engine, but have the dirt that I like. Mainly the 18 filter types (OS 1.2) which sounds very good. Next is the FX which is great by quality and quantity, specially the DJ type fx which sounds good for being tweaked live. and the drums..other than the very good sample selection, it also sounds good with a punch that feels right to me. I also like how the overall engine responded to the pattern sequencer when tweaked live.

Not the most user friendly, but works well for me. The limited synth engine can effectively being tweaked from the knobs provided. What friendly about it is to tweak live using the midi function and synth knobs, also when tweaking in loop remix.

you might want to read these, before deciding: RS7000, MC-808 comparisons. Good luck with the decision.

The Korg ESX-1 and EMX-1 would be a nice combo to think about.

no probs, just make sure to upgrade to the latest OS for some useful features and fixes. Also joint the RS7000 yahoo group run by Zamize (Zamizer7k) the RS7000 sage, a member of this group that made me got mine :)
