Klemt Echolette Replacement

Post by jonkull » Thu Sep 25, 2008 6:40 pm

I used to have a Klemt Echolette S that had belonged to my father in the '60s. One day it decided to set itself on fire and exploded in a shower of sparks. I kind of miss the thing. I can't afford to replace it or to by a real tape delay but was wondering if anyone knows of a decent substitute (similar grungy tape delay type sound) that's affordable. Like less than $500 affordable.

If you have up to $500 you can buy a real tape echo. A Roland RE-150 will cost less than that. You can probably pick up a solid state echoplex for under $500 . If you are looking for reliability, you can pick up a newish Hiwatt tape echo for less than $500. You might want to look at the boss/roland space echo modeling pedal. It is a digital emulation of a RE-250 space echo. Depending on the review you read it does anywhere from an ok emulation of the real think to an almost undistinguishable emulation. I think they go for $250ish new.

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to start doing some research but at least I have a starting point. I love the sound of the Klemt...so warm and fuzzy. Maybe I could use a EHX 2ube pre-amp with a Deluxe Memory Man (or some other kind of delay)... I'll have to look for audio demos of the roland space echo modeling pedal. That's a possibility as well.

Yeah, analog delays are great but obviously you wont get the same artifacts that tape give. This isn't good or bad but if you specifically want tape you probably have to go with tape or the emulation. If your going analog there are a fair amount of vintage and new BBD units to choose from. I like vintage ibanez delays and I've heard good things about the new carbon copy which has a long delay time.

I don't know how common they are Stateside, but Copicats can easily be had for less than the equivalent of $500 here in Britain. I've got one myself, £90 (=$180 right now) and the seller split shipping.

If it's something your after, get it. They don't come up that often stateside. Apparently guild made them in the US but you rarely see those either.
