Roland U-20 and JD-990

Post by rickyd » Tue Feb 17, 2009 5:24 am

Anyone have the Roland U-20 and Roland JD-990 in their rigs? I heard some on-board demos and samples of presets of the U-20 and the JD-990 and immediately fell in love.

Although nothin special, I like the synth-pop sounds of the U-20 as well as the D-50 like sonic quality. I also like the bright, lush, exotic pads of the JD-990, especially after hearing the on-board Demo "The City Weeps". Hearing those "ooo's" and that guitar playing through it had me hooked!!

I do reggae and the type of sounds that I want to use in my music in particular are exactly those type of sounds, so that is what all the fuss is about. lol.

All in all, I was basically looking for a synth that is something in between those two sonic qualities and have very similar sounds. The Roland JV-1080 maybe? I did hear some sounds of it and it's close, but I dunno.

I wouldn't mind getting both aforementioned synths so that I will be satisfied, but unfortunately my budget can't cut it, so I have to get 1 synth. I'm just trying to make the best choice for the type of sounds that I want in one board...IF possible.

The 1080 isn't a substitute for the JD-990. I had an XP-50, then an XP-30, and now a JD-990. The XP's had a somewhat
"compressed" quality to them. They're decent all-around synths and many of us have used one form or another, but it's not the same. The JD sounds "bigger". It's lush and full sounding and I recommend the Vintage Expansion, should you decide to go with it. If you know you really want these, why not just buy one and save up for the other?

If you haven't heard them, I always recommend these JD-990 demos by Don Solaris:

Fender Blacktop Jazzmaster | Squier CV Duo-Sonic | e6400 Ultra | Blofeld | a bunch of effects

Thnx for the info.

I could always get another later, yes. but my physical space is very limited, so that contributes more to the reason why I have to get 1 synth. Which sux.

I agree that the JD-990 is a different quality altogether from the JV-1080 and the U-20. Just wondering if there was a synth in between those two (The JD-990 and U-20 that is) sonic characters maybe, as well as the patches.

Oh and uh......the demos on that link you posted arent working. The site owners must've taken them down or the links are dead or somethin

That's odd about those demos not being up. Here are links to 2 other demos he did using just the presets:

http://jdcontest.awakeaudio.com/upload/ ... Dreams.mp3
http://jdcontest.awakeaudio.com/upload/ ... ced_JD.mp3

And other demos from a competition he organized where everyone submitted demos using only the presets:

Ok, those links work. Nice demos.

Still not sure if the JD-990 is what I want. It has a few sounds that I find useful, but I don't want to buy a synth that I'm not going to use for just a few sounds.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a JD-990 or a U-20. Basically I'm just looking for a synth that has lush exotic sounds like creamy pads, droney oohs, realistic shakuhachis, the basics for 80s synth-pop-type things. Stuff like that. I'm looking around for a synth like that but it's kinda hard being as I only have the net to depend on and not an actual shop near me where I can go and actually test out all of the sounds on synths for myself and the few shops that do have keyboards are little home keyboards and stuff like that.
