Realtime MIDI sequencer?

Hey guys,
First of all, I've floated around here for a while, but this is my first post here, so hi  .

Alright, so here's what I'm looking for - I'm trying to find some hardware that can sequence my midi synths live, and in realtime (well, as real time as midi can get). Like the old analog/CV sequencers, I want to be able to put in notes, change pitchs, all that live by just pressing a button, all while the sequencer is still going and sending out messages. I've seen similar things on grooveboxes (like the RM1X), but I don't want to spend all the money on one, only to use the sequencer.

I've looked around and I can't really seem to find anything that would work...Do you guys know of anything?

Thanks,
scutheotaku

PS : Sorry if that made absolutely no sense :)

PSS : As a sidenote, does the RM1x have any good sounds? While my setup is almost entirely analog, if it has some good quality sounds I may consider just getting it - assumming eBayers are price gouging them.

PSSS : Oh, and great site you guys have here! You've really done a great job setting it all up :)

the rm1x has some pretty solid sounds on it. i got it just for its sequencer, but i remember falling in love with its great drum and synth sounds. you won't be disappointed if you pick one up. its got a very intuitive sequencer.

Can you change between different tracks for recording / tweaking while it's running?

Other than that I don't think you'll find much along these lines that goes for less than an RM1X, sounds or no sounds.

Also have a look at the E-MU Command Stations.

One thing you might find a sticking point is wanting to change pitches on the fly, for that you'd probably need to look at the kind of MIDI sequencer that more closely mimics analogue style sequencers with knobs for each step.

So one question then would be - how many tracks?

A Korg EMX-1 might work for you. It's able to sequence 5 monophonic tracks but you can do a lot of tweaking while it plays.

Also the Elektron Monomachine could be worth a look.

Perhaps more ideally something like these:

RM1X will still be cheaper than most of your other options.

h**l, a RS7000 will be cheaper than most of those options. Two RS7ks in some cases..

I dunno bout the rest of you, but i cant stand sequencing without a set of at least 16 knobs and 16 buttons.
