Drum Machine - Korg S3 or Yamaha RY30?

Post by paugui » Sat Jun 06, 2009 8:10 pm

Hi

I have the chance of getting one of these two drum machines (Korg S3 and Yamaha RY30) in a trade.

Which one would you choose and why?

I do mainly electronic experimental ambiental music (like Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Brian Eno...), but I always enjoy experimenting other styles.
Which do you think suits more this kind of music?

Also, in which one is easier to do some grooves on?

Best regards

Paugui

To the Moderators - Sorry... I wasn't creating a thread for a long time and forgot about the buyers guide section... If you can I would appreciate a lot if you could send this thread there, thanks in advance

the ry30 is one of the best of those types of dms about

has nearly a full synth engine and a wheel to control and record parameter changes

plenty of card for extra sounds

the korg can sound great but for me a massive pain in the a*s to use, really hard to get around and use.

the ry all the way imo

The RY, only because i've had quite a few of them over the years, and have never even seen an S3 in person, much less heard one.

Thanks for your replies.

I was more into the RY-30 too.

I was only wondering if the RY-30 fits the kind of music I intend to do or if it is better to consider an Electribe or a TR another drum machine with a TR sequence editing style?

Thanks in advance,
Best regards

Autechre used an RY30... so there is a wide range of sound in that machine.

That seems cool, but how is the general workflow of the RY30?
Is it easy to work with?
Is that the only thing I have used as a drum machine is my Nord Modular G2X which I think as a really nice step sequencer, so I am quite inexperienced with drum machines.
Will the RY-30 be an easy one to start experimenting with?

The RY30 is as easy or as complex as you need it to be. If you want a simple looping drum machine, with ready made kits and good real time control from the mod wheel, then you'll be up and running, and getting good results in seconds.

If you want to get deeper, you can get into sound editing and layering, which is no more difficult than any synth of the same era (i.e. long winded, but logical). You can also edit sounds in realtime at a deeper level than the mod wheel will allow you to, so lots of craziness there.

If you want to be a power user, I guess you can get into programming your own macros, or use the RY30 as a hardware sequenecr for other gear, but I was quite happy to use mine at level 2.

I just played a bit on it and it seems quite cool.

To know that also made me get this drum machine.
I was just wondering in which albums did Autchre use the RY30?
Also, did they had wave cards for it, or it is possible to do some crazy electronic sounds out of it using just the original waveforms?

Thanks in advance,
Best regards
