I am looking for any 1970's synths. Arp, Roland, Moog, anything. I want to find one for under $300. It doesnt need to be mint. I just want something to record with. I live near lansing Michigan.

haha good luck!. i can remember seeing this guy selling russian analogue synthesizers on ebay for about that much, but good luck trying to get anything else!. if you don't mind getting you're hands dirty you should try the paia kits, you can get a decently kitted out modular for about 500, and a decent little analogue mono-synth for about 200.

I think most of us here have that same dream...
You might be able to find Akai AX-60 or Oberhiem Matrix 6 for under $300. You can definately score some A/D hydrids for under $300 such as Korg DW-8000 & Poly 61 and Roland JX series.

craigslist.org is about your best shot at finding Synth's cheap.
Just lurk around your area, and neighboring city's. eventually you'll find some good deals.
Tip:
Don't limit your self to searching in Music-Instruments only. try a broader search, Like Synth- Piano- Keyboard- Korg- Roland- ect.. In the search bar.
You'll be amazed by how many people have some nice gear, with no clue what it is or dose.
If all else fails, barter with people.
Some listings have astronomical prices. It never hurts to reason with the seller,
-and persuade him to come down on his asking price. Worst thing the seller could say is No

I would also add a search for "organ" to that list. So many people (especially ones "of a certain age") have no idea that "organ" is not a synonym for "synthesizer.

You can find Korg M-500 Micro Preset for a bit less. It is 70's and it's analog...
PS. Note that I didn't say is good...

Again, i will have to rise and defend the M500: it's very very cool.
It has great bass and very cool lead, sounds warm and has fun controls. It is limited but you can mix different presets to create something new.
Sold mine, i have a CS-5 and an SH-2000, and i don't play with them half as much as i've played the M500. So there.

Says the man with two Jupes and a Prophet...JMP wrote:Looks c**p, sounds c**p, one good bass sound and not a lot else

I'd have thought a CS-5 or 10 would be better than the MicroPreset. Maybe you could even grab a battered SH-09 for that, I don't know... they're going up, and I'm not sure about US prices. Certainly over here I'd expect the equivalent of $300 to get a low-end CS (forget the 01 unles you value street cred over usefulness - it does a mean PWM bass and nothing else) or one of the mid-80s lower-end polys... You could get retro digital for that, but if you're after something like the 70s monos, perhaps the CS-5, 10, or SH-09 (if you can find one for near enough that price) would be a good bet.

Anyway, for $300 you could probably pick up a Bit 1/99 ! Six voice poly, velocity sensitive 5 octave keys, dual, split and unison modes, MIDI and memories. There's a mint Bit 99 for £200 near me, a bargain.

Re: Wanted: old analog synths for $300 or under
This thread isn't about the M500 but i'll still add this comment : the OP never mentionned any preferences for presets over other types of synth. The M500 Micropresets gives you what it advertises, presets, with a little more tweakable fun. The presets sounds are pretty cool, cheesy for most of us, but if you're looking for warm retro synth presets, it's pretty good at that. The strings are very dry and nasal, but also very thick, thanks to the analog circuitry and old Korg IC chips. Also, let's not overlook the keyboard action: it's not amazing but compared to other lower-end analog monosynths, it's very decent. Has anyone tried the SH-2000? The aftertouch is a very cool feature but the keyboard and it's action just suck a*s, period.
Anyways, a CS-5 definitely has more range and tweakability, but it's all about what you need. The Micropresets will require far less knob twisting to get from one sound to another, but his more limited than a CS-5. In the end it's all about your needs, you say you just need something to record with, but what are you looking to record? Will you be playing these songs live? Are you more into presets or starting from scratch?

Um, sorry to slate something you own, but thick is a word I would never imagine used to describe any of the Micro Preset's sounds.... Anyway, from looking at his other posts, he's looking at Arp Solina's or similar. I suspect the Korg MP string sounds may be a tad dissapointing in comparison.LucB wrote:The strings are very dry and nasal, but also very thick

Yeah, I can offer you 2 analog synths for under $300, both NEED repair, and one is not even from the '70s.
