BTW the Mac Mini is 6.5" by 2' so a little creativity and ... well why not . :)

Yeah ... I couldn't resist even though it's not a half-rack space unit ...

Yeah definitely. If you mounted a deep 1U rack shelf you could just fasten the Mac Mini behind something shallow and still have 1U's worth of face left. I use VST's on my macbook all the time but a) it doesn't have firewire and b) I use it for a lot of different things.

I've been inspired and am going to sell off a bunch of hardware. I want to keep the rack reasonably sized and I've wanted to give live software a whirl. It makes a lot of sense and it just offers way more firepower for your dollar. I've sold a heinous amount of gear in the last two weeks so I think I'll be able to get rolling pretty quickly. For now I'm thinking I'll fill my 8U rack like this:

Potential dual-duty keyboard synth / bass synth rig?

- Fractal Audio Axe-Fx Ultra
- Nord Modular G2 Engine
- Mac Mini, StringPort, MOTU Ultralite Mk 3 (1U if you mount everything on a deep 1U tray and put the Mini behind the shallow G2)
- Fatty Power Amp
- Pull-out 1U LCD display w/ keyboard in case something goes wrong and you need to do something on the Mac
- Extra rack space for something I don't need
- USB/MIDI keyboard controller for keyboard gigs
- Behringer FCB1010 foot controller (the G2 and Mac would get you whatever mapping you needed)

I have almost all of that now and I've still got gear for sale and plenty of interest in it. I don't know why I never thought about the Mac Mini. It makes a lot of sense and it would be really stable.
