Well It's all about priorities really. If the 303 is something that you want above all other gear (ie. you won't buy anything else till you have a 303), then you will get it in the time it takes for you to earn the money to get one. For the majority though, that can, and most likely will end up taking a long time, so you must have determination if you want it badly enough.

The fact that you think that $1500 is too much for a 303 is irrelevant, 'cause there will be (and are) many others who are prepared to pay that much and do so. Thus the market price is relatively fixed.

So what you have to ask yourself is, is it worth the time and effort for me to save up that much?, and if so then go ahead and do so. If not, you can get a 303 clone or do without. Just don't expect one for a price you would rather pay than the current market value. Not to say you can't hope (and I do myself), but certainly it's not very likely.

Only option is to start savin' them dimes - I am ;)

Get a x0xb0x if you're not willing to shell out for a 303. To my ears, and the ears of many others it sounds the same and has an easier to work with sequencer + MIDI.

Then i say you should just get an x0xb0x if your budget has limitations. If you had bought a 303 say 3 or 4 years ago they would have been half the price they are now. Besides the x0x is the next best thing, very easy to use and will go great with your 707 for some good old chicago acid house.

no way, you'd need the real deal to be called 303brother. acid isn't just made with one synth :)

no drum machines either, I should imagine!

I'm only arguing cos I feel that way too. I think i have to do the same as the others and at least own a 303 before i can decide a x0xb0x will do :)

but they are just too damn expensive at the moment!

Gents.... really!

Some acid house music was made was on different machines besides the 303 alone.

Some examples:
808 State used 101's and 202's on their debut acid album Newbuild, plus a 303 (Gerald Simpson's machine)
Kevin 'Master Reese' Saunderson used a DX-100 for his acid sound on his track "The Groove That Won't Stop"
Rhythim Is Rhythim (Derrick May) used a DX-100 on his track "It is what It is" for his acid sound.
Mark Archer & Chris Peat (Altern8) used a 202 on their early acid house album called "Acid Trance" Blue Chip Records 1988.
Those urban acid & house albums on the UK Urban label, they only used 101's and 202's.
