portable keyboard with 303 style audio in/thru

Post by fletriste » Fri Mar 26, 2010 10:40 am

hi board - i've recently been doing some rough and ready gigs with 2*303 and a 606 with FX pedals... it's really useful to be able to daisy chain the audio to go through all the units then have a single output going straight into a DI box.....

does anyone know of a portable synth that has the same function as the 303 - ie. it has an audio mix in then sums them and outputs as a single channel?

I'd love to add a little cheeky synth in the daisy chain :)

any suggestions?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!!!!!!

I'm probably going to get killed over this, but the microKORG has ext. input which you can route directly to the output.

E-mu command stations and the proteus series modules with 6 outputs all have inserts on the sub outs

+1 The Mackie 1202 VLZ has been the best $300 I've ever spent (you can get them for $100 - $150 used, but look for the older Made in USA models.

With a mixer you will be able to control the levels of each instrument indepently. While daisy chaining is nice & easy, it's more difficult to get the right levels.

Back on topic, the Roland HS (Home Synth) series has stereo inputs. The HS-60 is basically a Juno 106 and the HS-80 is a alpha Juno 2. I've got a HS-80 which I use to "audition" new aquisitions and items for sale. I use the Roland Fantom X6 similarly.

Some newer synths have audio inputs for processing, but I bet you can bypass the processing as well.

Get a mixer OR if the venue can do it, send each needed chain seperately to the venue's mixing board. Then the sound man can take care of levels.

When I played in a band I used a shitty behringer for the first 2 years, and one of the largest improvements in our sound was when I scrapped it and sent a few separate instruments to the main board. If I had used a better quality mixer in the first place though it'd probably have made less of a difference, but the summing on the behringer was so crappy it really made a difference when amplified to bar levels. So if you go the mixer route get something that doesn't destroy the audio it's mixing.

Ive got a Korg EMX and use the audio input feature a lot. Also whats cool is that you can control the master synth volmues via midi for each of the 5 synth channels right off the EMX. You would have to midi daisy chain the Emx as master and then out to each of your synths.
