Roland R8

Is the Roland R8 an Ideal drum machine for someone like me who makes IDM beats along the lines of Aphex Twin, or Newcleus style electro?

Probably not. The R8's name is "Human Rhythm Composer". Although it was released in the late 80's, it has very convincing acoustic drum sounds and features to give a more natural and human feel to drum programming.

The Elektron SPS-1 MachineDrum excels at IDM type of sounds, but might be more than you want to spend (you did not indicate a price range, but it is certainly more than the R8).

If you're looking in the $200-$400 range, take a look at the Korg Electribe series, like EMX-1 & ER-1.

Ironically, I just noticed he indeed has a Machinedrum already.
I would stick with that.

The R8 would be great for IDM...apparently autechre used one back in the day. If you're creative enough really any drum machine will do. Depends on what your musical goals are. I hear it's easy to come up with some sick patterns on the R8 though.
